     IT'S EXCITING ALL THE BUZZ

THAT IS BEING CREATED here in the store by us and by you

  NEWS :

WE HAVE A  ' Big-Theme ' Value Wine-Tasting planned for Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 from 5:30-8:30PM, Free, Join Us, Taste ' insane values ' to taste and buy just in time for Father's Day on Sunday, June 19th,.

COME TASTE HERE and get some great bottles of wine for your father , you buy more than one or two bottles, mix up six, give him an assortment. You can afford it because you are saving big on each bottle that you buy, and you can sav up to an additional 20% if you buy bottles over $20 or you buy a case of twelve or more.

You can start voting I understand starting today in the Democratic Primary , and voting contiues into the weekend?
You may wish to come and select whatever you enjoy drinking at this time of the year to celebrate that you voted, the sunny hot, slightly humid weather, perhaps with a light breeze if you ' up on a rooftop ", or on a balcony, outside, grilling, chilling, smiling.

HOPE EVERYONE enjoyed a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. It was relaxing for our family, lots of necessary yardwork with all the previous rain. It looks better. I am getting some real delight in sweating like a pig as I work and clearing out some of our flower beds of too much that competes with the flowers we really want to see bloom, that is, if our local, healthy deer population does not get them before they have a chance. We saw a hummingbird, too at our feeder, and this must ne The Year of the Chipmunk!

WHY DO I MENTION ALL this ?!?Because sometimes having a beer or a mixed drink or a glass of wine while watching all of this can be quite pleasing and relaxing.

FUNNY, it is hard to find a healthy balance between working and relaxing, and yet we achieved it pretty well, even though we did not get our first swim in over the weekend. That did sadden me some, I would have liked it. Oh well, perhaps this coming weekend, the forecast is good for the week and this Saturday, maybe rain on Sunday.

REALLY FUNNY how weather talk is gaining even more of our time, concentration and space. We are all scrambling to make good decisions to maximize the time we have to relax.

YOU CAN ALWAYS COME HERE, we always have something to mention, some great, ridiculous sale going on, and we try and bend your ear to be sure you know about it or any others as you walk around the store in search of what you came for, and perhaps something else as an ' added bonus ' before you leave.

I HAVE ALREADY BEEN TWEETING this morning. If you want to see what I have been tweeting about FOLLOW us at CPWINESPIRITS, and also at WINEENABLER. I am trying to reach out to those that tweet more than anything else.

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK about tweeting? Please share your thoughts as I am doing it in the hopes of reaching a larger audience for us here. What do you know about it, do you tweet? Do you learn valuable info from tweeting that you would not get otherwise? Please share your thoughts.

I TASTED them all with Andrew Stover a couple of weeks ago and was quite impressed, they are all so different, I had my favorite but that will change depending on the time of day or night I drink them, and if there is a meal involved, indoors or outdoors, the weather?!? So many variables, the temperature, too at which they are served. Come try one of each, have fun, explore, watch the movie 1973, a whole 'nother world back then! ' Its aromatic smoothness brings to mind cut flowers and creamy lemon cheesecake. Crisp and focused, with a herbal, drying finish, this is an ideal aperitif and partner to smoked fish, sushi or scallops. " I like all of this, what great food pairing suggestions, this is superb, brilliant marketing as they make some great pairing suggestions here, I like the creamy lemon cheesecake reference a whole lot. Cheers, come try some.

I fell in love with this and the others when I tasted them with Amanda, I fell in love immediately, SUPERB!

WINE From Chris & Tony :

1)Chardonnay Dominio de Punctum Organic Vineyards  from FINCA FABIAN , $9.99 a bottle, 2014, with 13% alcohol by volume, this is bright, lively and a real treat to enjoy all by itself, or with a meal. Also comes in the red Tempranillo. Cheers.

     2) Tinto 2014 ' Montecastrillo ' dry red Ribera Del Duero from FINCA TORREMILANOS, $14.99, made by law with 100% Tempranillo grapes, aged in oak for 4 months to make it a bit earthier, beefier, more rustic and edgy, great color, intriguing bouquet, quite the treat to sip and enjoy with a meal, almost anything off the grill, it should be slightly chilled, sipping late at night while looking up at the moon and stars. The moon should be visible tonight! We had this poured here this weekend by Euripedes and Nassos on Saturday afternoon, it was well-received, sold, too by those of you lucky enough to taste it then.

     3) 100% Chenin Blanc from CHARLES BOVE, made in France's Loire Valley , 2014, imported by Vintage 59 and Roy Cloud, superb quality, what a Chenin Blanc can be, a tasty one that we will taste here with Graham Isaac our local Contry Vintner rep that sells them to us. Graham and I are looking at another Vintage 59 wine to pour together with this Vouvray, might be their sparkling wine! Stay-tuned.

BUY These Following, SAVE 20% OFF stickers tomorrow:

SPEAKING of France's Loire Valey :

     4) ' Les Millets ' 2013 Reuilly dry rose from JOSEPH MELLOT , $20.99 a bottle, this is an amazing and complex dry rose with a really light , pale color, and yet the flavors fly up and out from the glass! It will make a great dry rose to enjoy when you grill, have some wild salmon filets off the grill, smoked fish or turkey even, this is a hearty hefty flavorful beauty that both knows and speaks it's mind!

     5) 2012 dry red blend from Wellington, South Africa, a blend of 81% Shiraz , 17% Mourvedre and 2% Viognier grapes, from THOKOZANI, $21.49, with 14% alcohol by volume. I really like the smooth and bright, lively, edginess that is softened and become even more fruit-centered with the alcohol , it is charming, it is tasty, it will stick with you and your palate will remember the flavors and want more, a treat

     6) Macabeu 2013 , 100% Macabeu indigenous grape variety from Spain, from JOSEP FORASTER, this rich, complex, layered, viscous white is made from old vines, with extra skin contact, more time on the lees, from Montblanc , a D.O. from Conca de Barbera, with 13% alcohol by volume, this is a great food wine and will hold it's own against many a dish, well-seasoned, aged, grilled, ... they make fine sparkling Cava, too, we carry both. The owner himself was here, and we hit it off really well from the get-go! So Josep Foraster is now family, one of the Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits group : we are a really big family here.

     7) Red 2010 dry Israeli blend from SOUTHERN WINERY, sooo smooth, so silky and bright, no bite, a true and pure taste that is buffered by the alcohol, I liked it a lot when I poured it here this past Friday night from 5-8PM, it would be great with many grilled meats, some flavorful cheeses, it showed brilliantly this past Friday. It is not kosher however, from Ramat Negev, $28.99 a bottle, you should come treat yourselves, chill it thirty-forty minutes, it will warm up to the perfect temperature, and be a special wine to celebrate with!

IT WILL BE FUN, it will be exciting, many rose dry wines, some sparkling, too will be poured by four of our favorite reps that represent really fine portfolios of trose wines :

1) Oscar Losama co-owner with his wife Olivia Bobart of Voila Collection / Oslo Enterprise that specializes in French wine. Oscar always comes by with samples, many of them, of his fine small estates all around France for us to try. As a result we always buy an assortment from Oscar, and are happy to do so as we have thus tasted the wines and have some real idea of what we will be tasting. That is important. From Oscar we will only our French wines, and they represent all prices, all styles, all different colors and densities, too of rose dry wines, prices as well. Thank you, merci Oscar, merci Olivia, can't wait to taste the Provence, Costieres de Nimes,  and southwest French wines, too, like Saint-Chinian - the ' ever-popular ' La Vie En Rose ', 2015, $16.99, ... and more ...

Thanks Bill, thanks Alan. From Alan one I look forward to is the ' Les Ligeriens ' Val de Loire, Loire Valley Rose D'Anjou 2015, $11.99, because it is always a touch off-dry and so nice to sip all by itself. Some of our customers love this style, so we must have some each year.

4) Erin Weaver our local rep for Lanterna Imports actually suggested this idea to me for another rose tasting and I jumped on it once I thought about it. It makes perfect sense, really works for us. This will be wonderful. With Erin we will have Le Grand Courtage , a Grand Cuvee Brut rose, $22.99 a bottle, that has a lovely focused, firm yet generous pleasing taste. really quite special! Erin will also have one French dry rose from Corbieres that was delightful, as well as some Spanish roses, and also a Vinho Verde dry rose, too!

THanks Erin for suggesting this to me over the phone the other night. ON FRIDAY we have a tasting of some fine German wines with Chris Bartha from 5-8PM, that may include some sparkling, may also include some French and Italian wines. I have to catch up with Chris and see what he has up his sleeves for us this Friday. It will be great , the wines are first-rate, small production in many cases, and also some sensational values, especially the Italian wines!

SATURADAY, April 23rd, 2016 ( 2-6PM ) : We have Marianna Annio of her own Agricole PIETRAVENTOSA winery from Puglia, Italy that I mentioned above, with the dinner the next night at CASA LUCA.

THIS WILL BE THE SHORTEST EMAIL I have every posted, sorry, do not worry, just too many important owners and winemakers that came by today from ...

Betsy Nachhaur , Russian River Valley, CA. that with her husband Bill that makes the wines, tasted me on five of their filed blend reds and I was blown away with the 2011, 2012 Dolcetto, loved the fruit-centered qualities of the Zinfandel 2012, liked very much the Cabernet Franc 2012, too, all five were amazingly well-made, well-balanced wines, what an incredible treat.

WE ALSO HAD owner Michael Honig of his family's  CA. Napa Valley HONIG fine Sauvignon Blancs and also Cabernet Sauvignons, and before that we had ...

Robert Kennedy here to talk about our wine-dinner and wine-tasting here for the Agricole PIETRAVENTOSA, with  ...

Kerry Tate of the Diamond District Wines  also tasting me on some superb REZABAL Txacoli de Getaria  Basque whites, a dry white and rose Txakolina, the dry 2014  white was thicker, denser, more packed and fleshy in flavor, the 2015 rose was soft and silky and delicate. Wow, loved both of them, each $18.99 a bottle, here in May as are the HONIG wines of Napa,  and the ACORN Winery  wines of the Russian River Valley.

THEN ERIC PLATT comes by with three killer wines, tow reds from Spain, a 2007 Priorat red that we will put On Special for $11.99 a bottle, a Jumilla red Cabernet, Syrah and Monastrell red blend for the same price, and a  WEINGUT EUGEN WEHRHEIM 2013 Niersteiner Bildstock Riesling Kabinett Rheinhessen German white, with 10% alcohol by volume, that will be On Special for $13.99 : all three are splendid, amazing wines, great values, and all drinking really well now, though they can all be enjoyed over a long period of time as they are still improving in the bottle.
They will be here the first week of May, so come and place your orders here now before I sell out. I have a bottle of the German Riesling open here for you to taste now when you get off work.

THANK YOU for everything , sorry this email is so short, will do better next week.

ENJOY THE results of the primaries tonight with something you get here before heading home! We have something for any of you, just let us know what you like.

Cheers, thanks again,  TONY

CLEVELAND PARK WINES & SPIRITS 3423 CONN. AVE. N.W. D.C. 20008

HAPPY WARMER DAYS SOON AHEAD, & Rainless Week Ahead! We all want to shed our thicker layers of clothes, get suntans, relax, not be rushing while outside, soaking up all those glorious rays that warm and inspire, that fire our imaginations, fleshing-out our lives, giving ourselves a pat on our backs, on those of our loved ones, telling them how much you appreciate being with them.

ALL IS NOT LOST, it is there to be found. We just have to keep moving, keeping active, with some purpose, some list of what we want to do today and this week, for this month, before the end of this year. Pacing ourselves, that is the key, and we try and help you all accomplish that.

WE LOVE WHEN YOU STOP BY to chat as many of you do. We love that you think of us as a resting-spot, a second home, an oasis from the elements, a shelter from the storms that rage on so many plains from politics, to global weather and warming,  to diseases, cancers, aging, discrimination, hatred, loss of much transparency, forgetting honesty and humbleness, wow, the list is long and yet I say : " Go outside, feel the breeze, listen to the birds chirp, watch the squirrels jump from tip-of-tree-branch long distance over to other tree or rooftop, , catch the quick scamper of the chipmunks dashing for cover from flower pot to canopy of gree-leafed day lillies, the buzz of a bumble bee, the annoying buzz of a fly close by, the grace of a lady bug. It is all therapeutic.

IT HELPS ME to dig in the earth of our yard as I did yesterday, to transplant some of our Nandinas and group them together.

IT WAS BEAUTIFUL TO WHEEL my mother around outside so she could feel the sun's rays, the breeze, the spotty drops of wet and cooling rain, listen to the birds chirping and singing gloriously.

ALL GOOD, that is what we all need, some good of the earth grounding as we bike or run or walk through the parks, escape upstairs to roof tops, to balconies, simply opening a window and closing our eyes and breathing-in the freshness of outdoors.

WE CAN ALSO HELP YOU by greeting you as you deserve, a nice ' hello ', a smile, a grin, a simple : " How are you? " , " Welcome to our store. ", " So nice to see you again. None of this costs us anything and yet it breaks the ice, melts our steel barriers up to protect us from so much external, harmful, disruptive noise.

I DID A LOVELY SMALL Private Wine-Tasting for five wonderful young ladies, librarians, one of them getting married and going to France, England and Iceland for their honeymoon! Wow, we had a blast , four wines to delight in from France ( Bordeaux 2010 , Costieres De Nimes 2011 ) , one orange wine, a Kisi from Georgia, an amazing Cremant De Bourgogne.

THEN I ESCORTED THESE FIVE LOVELY YOUNG LADIES over to Sorriso restaurant to introduce them to owner Pietro that they did not know, they had booked a meal there from reading positive reviews of Sorriso! I love that, love it when the neighborhood shines.

THEN I CAME BACK, cleaned up, washed our wine glasses and headed home for a much-needed break from all this wonderful activity here in Cleveland Park, a ' happenin' ' neighborhood. So much always happenin' right under our nose and we do not even know about it.

EVERYTHING IS SELLING these days, you are all interested in everything pretty much it seems. Everything is open to discussion, to trying, to making in our own unique way. So many of us are ' new ' mixologists today. That is exciting. So many of you are amateur beer-makers. Our Swedish neighbor is growing hops and so we will see what that will produce ath the end of this year? The plant went in this past fall and looks like it survived our winter, so now only time will tell!?!

          THREE  BEERS :

     1) ' Triple " KARMELIET, On Special for $13.99 a 1 Pt. 9.4Fl. Oz bottle, with 8.4% alcohol by volume, this is an authentic Belgian ale from Belgium, : " Round, robust, smooth and fruity, with a delicate spicy flavor. Bottle conditioned ale made with Oats, Barley and Wheat, a true ' 3 grain ' ale, 100% natural. "

We also string, stake, train, test, trim, separate, sort, kiln and cool them. ... "

          LIQUEUR, LIQUOR From Jagir :

     1) ' Tierras ' TEQUILA Autenticas de Jalisco, 100% Agave, , the Reposado, certified organic, USDA Organic, made, hecho en Mexico, On Special for $40.99 a bottle, with 40% alcohol by volume, I like this, I like it a lot. Eddie Ofori tasted me on this years ago, I found it so elegant, so fine, so polished, really liked it, have been selling it ever since! Now Eva sells it to us, really a fine Tequila that comes in Anejo and also Blanco On Special for $36.99 a bottle. Cheers, come get a bottle of each.

     2) RUSSELL'S Reserve Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, 6 Years Old, with 45% alcohol by volume, On Special for $43.99 a bottle : " More than 90 years. That's the combined tenure of Master Distillers Jimmy & his son Eddie Russell. They hand select barrels after at least 6 years of aging, resulting in a Rye that delivers a balance of smooth, complex allspice, pepper and almond flavors. Their experience guarantees yours. " Come check this out, try some on for size, fit and feel!

     3) Uigeadail The Ultimate Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, from ARDBEG, On Special for $76.99 a bottle, with 54.2% alcohol by volume, it is non-chill-filtered, what a flavorful intensely smooth peaty taste, great price, too!

          LOCAL Distiller Success-Story-Blossoming!

     1) ' Royal Seal ' Magnus Inaugural edition Vodka, $27.99, from Nicole, her sister Danny Hassoun, and another : they rock! I was blown away, so was everyone else that came by here and tasted with us a week or so ago. Nicole came by, she waited patiently to taste. She helped me with one of our regular customers to pick out a local gift ( we both recommended highly the white whisky Rock Creek, $32.99 from ONE EIGHTH ), and Nicole talked us through the three that she has for sale now. Danny delivered the three last week, what a treat, many have already sold , like the Bourbon whiskey, and a lot of the gin, too.
I loved this Royal Seal Vodka, it blows me a way fro it's lightness, brightness, and freshness, as well as it's unique style that made me dub it the ' crossover ' between vodka and gin, like a vodka with a splash of gin added to it to give that extra excitement of a gin and yet the lightness and brightness of a vodka!
This may be a whole ' new ' category : ' crossover ' of a gin and a vodka, or a vodka and a gin?!? You may be hearing this from me first. After all, why not? Either or both, one being the base and something to tweek that base? I think there is real promise in this idea. We will see, time will tell. $27.99 a bottle for the vodka and the gin, both exceptional, all three in stock, the Bourbon whiskey is just shy of $90 a bottle.
Nicole tells us our price is great and that she will send customers our way becasue of this. Thanks Nicole, Watch my video on Facebook that I took of her waxing poetic over her spirits.

WINES OF ALL TYPES From Chris, Tony :

     1) Castell De Raimat Albarino 2014 from Costers Del Segre RAIMAT, $11.99 a bottle : a ridiculous price for a Spanish Albarino, with 12.5% alcohol by volume, this is a lovely dry white wine with good taste and presence, and a great value for the most remowned grape variety in Spain. Lovely. Try some!

     2) Cabernet Sauvignon de Chile from ALMA, the Private Reserve 2013, On Special for $9.99, with 14% alcohol by volume, an Aconcagua Valley Cabernet that is  tasty, flavorful, distinct, balanced dry red, I like it a lot, I really do. Some of these inexpensive wines like this really over-deliver and that is exciting as so much is expensive and not worth the asking price. Be selective, we try and be always, if we can save you money and give you great taste, distinct flavors for less moeny then we have really succeeded!

THIS MAKES ME THINK, too of the dinner we are working on with owner Manuel Rojas od ALMA De Chile wines, and with Coppi's Organic down the street in the old Lavandou location! I have asked Carlof the owner of Coppi's Organic to come to the store today to work on setting a menu for a spectacular dinner down there as soon as we can set a date! So exciting, keep checking with us as we work on this project together.

WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old store email I wrote , read it, enjoy it, check for current availability and new prices? Thanks, cheers, happy week as we move closer to Passover and Earth Day, the New York Primaries, saying Bye-Bye to American Idol, having The Voice going strong, asking about the cumulative effects of the Uptown's movie about Batman and Superman?!? So many things going on, exciting and lots for us to do as we consider wisely, getting money back from the IRS, thinking of the Summer Olympics, watching to see if our female U.S. soccer players get equal pay to that awarded, given to their male counterparts? That would be nice, I believe .... cheers all! Thanks again for everything.

CHARLES Just Came By and said : " Satva, great mattresses, look it up, planned obsolescence " with so many of the ' new ' matresseses he continued. His wife Pamela liked the hand-written note I gave Charles for them. I like writing notes still, a dying art, but brings a smile to my face each and every time that I write or see one. Cheers. Thanks Charles for the heads-up on Satva.

Wine By Chris & Tony :

1) Chenin Blanc 2013 Fairtrade from FAIRVALLEY inW.O. Western Cape, South Africa, $$11.99, with 13% alcohol by volume. This is smooth and bright and crisp and a touch tart and tangy, and bracing even, and wonderful for this spring weather of ours. It is in our 6-bottle sampler and it would have been wonderful this weekend sitting outside and enjoying a lunch and looking out and about as literally before your eyes the trees start to sprout small amounts of green at their many branch tips.

2) Tannat 2012 ( great year in Serra Gaucha ) ' Intenso ' dry red from SALTON. I enjoyed the last of it after Michael Cavanagh tasted it here this past Friday night with you all. What was left in the bottle at the end of Saturday night came home with me and I shared it with our neighbor and our ILDA pool neighborhood gents, Jim and Brian that came to pick-up things for their pool auction to raise money.

WE DONATED things and that brought a huge smile to my wife's face, and I invited them to taste some Chilean wines DOS PASOS, ALMA, IN SITU, and also the ' Father's Watch ' red Rhone Sonoma Coast blend from KIVEL STADT Cellars , On Special, also in our 6-pack sampler , for $19.99 instead of $24.99 a bottle). Both the SALTON Tannat 2012, On Special for $13.99, ... both tasted really fine even after being open almost three days. SO : the SALTON and the KIVEL STADT improved for me, they did not diminish in any noticeable way, I liked them better, especially the KIVEL STADT that really did soften and brighten and reveal more of it's inner core. What fun.

3) Zinfandel ' The Heart ' from California's Mendocino County, from IL CUORE, $14.49, 14.1% alcohol by volume, is smooth and very fruit-forward, I like it, medium-to-light-bodied, really nice, no need for any food, you may sip this all by itself.

4) Fateasca Neagra 2011, DOC-CT from Husi, Romania, thi s ' Glia ' , $14.99, is made from this indigenous grape Fateasca Neagra, and is showing so well now, only 5,090 bottles produced, and the flavors have matured nicely here and the wine is showing really well. But do not take my word, come taste it and see what you think with Razvan and Gabriella the next Friday, April 24th, 2015 from 5-8PM here.

5) ' Clos Lojen ' 2012 from Spain's Manchuela region, this indigenous Bobal , $16.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, is really evolving nicely and showing a fullness, and a ripeness , brightness that is exciting and flavorful and balanced. This is good wine, really good wine. I like it, you all have, too every time that our local rep Amy tasted it with you all here. It is even further along on it's journey to complete and wonderful enlightenment, enlightenment for all of us, too. Cheers.

6) ' The Lady of Naoussa ' NAOUSSEA, Greece, a 2008 Oynth Kthma, $16.99, 13% alcohol by volume, blew me away when I tasted it last. I loved it, I absolutely loved it, that is why it is here for you all to discover and enjoy it's many wonders and charms. Earthy and pithy, a spicy, rustic, with lots of gamey flavors, nothing exactly polished or refined, more the guts of the grapes, the brute natural strength and varnished glories and weaknesses of this indigenous Xinomavro grape as it struggles to dig deeper roots and survive in this Naoussa region of Greece. It succeeds, too.

TIME For BEER from Santos :

1) ' Or Xata ' Blonde Ale brewed with rice from The BRUERY , a 2015 Edition On Special at $12.99 a bottle, in a 1 Pt. 9.4 Fl. Oz bottle, with cinnamon and vanilla beans added , from Placentia, CA. Looks so inviting! I like the label and packaging a lot.

2) ' Reserve Series' Raspberry Stout ' from HARDYWOOD, $10.99, a 1 Pt. 9.4Fl. Oz bottle in a 2015 release. We just got this, customers were asking for it ( " the berries were grown by AgrBerry - cultivate a taste for life - ", made in Richmond, Virginia by the HARDYWOOD PARK CRAFT Brewery.

3) ' Del's Shandy ' from NARRAGANSETT, refreshingly different, beer with natural lemon flavor, a recipe from great grandmother DeLucia made the first frozen lemonade back in Italy in 1840. to me
HOW CAN WE COPE? How can we manage?!? The weather is calling the shots along with politics, climate change, all the uncertainties everywhere that are constantly knocking and pounding and ringing at, on all around us! Argh! What can we do, where to hide, where to find comfort and solace and peace? What better place than here in a spirits retail shop that caters completely to your wants, whims, wishes, winters, wanders, wonders, why's , when's, whether's , ... you get the idea.

I AM TRYING THIS '  new ' email format today and I am praying that it will work. I hope everything today goes off without any glitch. Glitches can be very frustrating, tricky, and I would rather have no glitches today, especially as it is cold but sunny, breezy and so beautiful outside.

WE ARE IN GOOD COMPANY here as acrsoss the street Batman and Superman are keeping us really safe here in Cleveland Park a ' happenin' place and neighborhood '! We have a wonderful community here and having two of the greatest super-powers here now is really something special. How many of you have already seen the movie? Come and share your thoughts and impressions. I grew up reading the original comics of both as they were written and released. I loved them, really I did. I looked forward to them, to the next issues, readin the super hero ones as well as Veronica and Archie comics, too! Boy that seems like eons ago.

IT IS ROSE SEASON and we are gearing up nicely for them. It is also beer season now, and we are working on many of those as well. Never a dull moment as our local rep Mary Lynn for SHINER was here last week ( check the photos I posted on our Facebook page last week with her, me and Andrew Stover, quite nice .... and, prosit as they say, " This beer, however- our first India Pale Ale - has taken a dose of wickedness to brew ... " ), so was ours for PEAK Organic beer, and also for GREAT LAKES. Always something exciting to taste here first amongst ourselves and then with you all, and often on Fridays and Saturdays we have them come here and pour them for you. I look forward to trying the SHINER Wicked Ram IPA, On Special for $10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, with 6% alcohol, from the SPOETZL Brewery in Shiner, Texas : " A little wicked goes a long way. "

IN ROSE WINES we have several more coming over the next two weeks to capture your attention and imaginations, like the Daniel Crochet Sancerre rose 2014 that is just really now coming into it's own and is On Special for $17.49 a bottle, regularly $25.99 a bottle, what an amazing wine, what a treat, 100% PInot Noir from France's Loire valley, always a favorite.

SPEAKING OF SANCERRE rose 100% Pinot Noirs we have two other really worthy ones for you all to consider :  ... 1) ' Les Chailloux ' 2015 from Francois et Jean-Marie Cherrier, vignerons, winemakers at Chudoux, On Special for $21.99, and the ... 2) DOMAINE De CHEZATTE  2014, $20.99, also really now realizing more of it's full potential with this extra time in the bottle to flesh-out, fill-out, blossome gloriously! THREE FINE SANCEREE ROSE WINES HERE NOW TO enjoy immediately!

IT IS ALSO Sangria Time : and this Saturday Stuart Carter of Bacchus Imports tasted the two ' new ' ones from SENOR SANGRIA : a red and a white, $9.99, made with Chilean wine and fruit from New York in New York State. Wow, both are delicious, really quite the treat, especially as it wil, one of these moments be amazingly hot and humid and bright and we will all be running for cover and soothing, pleasing liquid refreshment, and these two will provide that for many of us. Come check out what all this liquid ' noise ' is all-of-a-sudden about! I just tasted them for the first time with Stuart this past week here, and immediately liked them both, prefering just a bit myself the white over the red for it's extra layers of fruit and great mouth-feel-comfort. Yummy.

DISCOVERING : PUR- LIKOR. Elderflower liqueur ...

IT IS OVERALL a good time if one can navigate through the muck and all the interference of converging forces and winds and distractions to us simply living and coping and finding the good in our lives to make it all worth the while and the trials and tribulations. Ouch! Like discovering ... 1) PUR - LIKOR ' Blossom ' an elferflower liqueur made in Germany by Kiki and her excellent group. Kiki brought this here to us herself and we are thrilled to have discovered it, unfiltered, pure and tasty, what it really is and can be for you all to enjoy by itself or when blended with various dry white wines, vodkas, bubbly sparkling wines, whatever suits your fancy, maybe even some gin, and on desserts, too, pind cake possibly?!? I need to take some home to experiemnet. I need to become mixologist, too : I already am at heart.

JUST HAPPENED : Silvia Casali Calls Robert Kennedy ...

SILVIA CASALI of her family's own TENUTA CASALI wines just called Robert here, ( I was the first to speak to her! surprising her I am sure , in English, when she thougt she would be speaking Italian with Robert ), and she sounds fine, and wanted to discuss his plans and arrival schedule in Italy at the end of this week to attend this years Vin ITALIA show. I am so jealous. Wish I could go myself, that would be amazing.

FROM SILVIA makes this delicious Villa Zappi rose sparkling from Emilia, Italy, $18.99 a bottle, really a delicate, refreshing lively minuet of bubbles that charms and pleases and sets the mood for smiling and relaxing, yeah, with  11.5% alcohol by volume. I like it, so do many of you. You have tried it when Silvia herself poured it for you all here on a Saturday, cannot get any better than that.

ALWAYS MAKING a discovery here, and today I want, once again, to draw attention to the Irish whiskey CLONTARF 1014, their ' classic blend ' , triple-distilled, aged gently in bourbon barrels, this for $21.99 is so flavorful, so ' on fire ' in an appealing way, I love it, Eddie Aufori introduced it to me several years ago, and I have been a fan ever since, great value, too!

CHAD COMES BY from Catoctin Creek Distillers ...

WE SET UP A TASTING with Chad to do an in-store tasting of his fabulous brandy, ( a ' Distiller's Reserve ' Virginia brandy from Loudoun County, hand-crafted, small-batch, $47.99, with 40% alcohol by volume ), as well as with his whiskey and his gin. This will be great. Stay-tuned for more info. Chad will be here on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016 from 5-8PM to taste these three fine spirits of his , and maybe also introduce something new that we do not already know about? I will check soon with Chad as we get closer to this date. In the meantime come and try some of this deliciously-smooth Virginia brand that is made locally by owners/ distillers Beck and Scott Harris. Cheers.

          AMADOR Whiskey Co. ....

OUR LOCAL REP did a tasting of the AMADOR Whiskey Co. Double Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey ( finished in Napa Valley wine barrels ), and after the tasting he left the bottle and we continued to taste it. It has pleased many a palate, from here and from all around the world. Come and check it out, pretty amazing, some real fire and some real burn, yes some almost-live flame, and yet it perkulates, simmers and pleases so! On Special for $45.99 a bottle, come get a bottle and enjoy.

RONNIE MILLER JUST CALLED, he and Herve Gantier the owner of the DOMAINE SAINTE-EUGENIE in Corbieres, France are coming now to see me here. Wow, it will be great to see Herve once again. He has the biggest, broadest, most beautiful smile of any Frenchman that I have ever met, goes from one year lobe all the way over to the other! We have now in stock from Herve some of his La Reserve Recolte 2012, $17.99, and it sure is a full, rich, complex dry red Rhone southern France blend of grapes with a brightness, a frankness, a personality with character and breed all of it's own. When I dined at Marcel's restaurant with Antoine Songy, Herve Gantier and Ronnie MIller they were pouring it by the glass! I love that, makes me smile, makes me both happy and proud for Herve and his winemaker, winemaking team. Bravo! A bientot Herve, ca m'a faire grand plaisir de te voir!

         MORE Wonderful wines :

     1) La Griveliere Cotes Du Rhone ' Tete de Cuvee ' 2014, On Special for $8.99 a bottle, with 13% alcohol by volume, this dry Rhone French blend way over-delivers for this price of only nine bucks a bottle! Come and check it out, glad to have it back, thrilled to have it at this price. Great wine when you grill, are outdoors, chill slightly and enjoy with food, what a tasty treat to complement the flavors of your meal.

     2) Pinot Noir 2013 from California and made by Sonoma winery MURPHY-GOODE, $13.99, what a fine value for a tasty red that actually has finesse and brightness/lightness as a Pinot really should be, it is quite pleasing, and really well-priced as well. We tasted it here this past Friday with Jade our local rep of Monument Imports, and I was quite impressed, pleased, smiling, happy to have a tsty, balanced Pinot that is so affordable! Cheers.

     3) ' Piria ' red sparkling Emilia Lambrusco red from PALTRINIERI < $14.49, is also a perfect warm-weather wine, this one with some tasty toasty sparkle with overtones of dried cherries, strawberries, other berries, a mellowness that age has bestowed it, very light in red color now, almost deep rose in color, this is a grand winner, really very special and tasty indeed. Robert Kennedy just delivered a fresh shipment here today. We are all ready to rock-and-roll with you now with this delight.

          The BREWER'S ART Presents :

     1) Choptanr'd Saison , an ale with natural flavors, On Special for %10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce cans, with only 4% alcohol by volume, wow, now that is low, that will be distinct and refreshing for the HEAT WAVE as it is sure to come suddenly here, and when it does, this will be an absolute delight.

          HONEY FLAVORED VODKA ' Buzz ' :

     1) WE are getting into that season where some of this honey-flavored vodka ' Buzz ' from the ALASKA DISTILLERY might be just the ticket indeed to enjoy as temperatures rise in the day and then later perhaps plummet at night, when you are outside at night watching the stars twunkle, perhaps even counting how many of them that you can that are bright, visible and twinkling?!? It sells for $33.99 a bottle, with 35% alcohol by volume. We usually taste this, too about this time, so do not be surprised to see it soon at one of our tastings, weekend-tasting, cheers.

ON THIS 3rd DAY OF SPRING to start thinking about being outside more and what better wines to do this with than Austrian?!? They are so refreshing and buoyant and lively and fresh and many seem to defy gravity almost. I am always charmed by them and many of you seem to be in this same predicament. It's really a good place to be in and we are here to help facilitate this transition seemlesly into spring here in Cleveland Park with two real experts on Austrian wines : our two special guests -  Klaus Wittauer and Daniel Hubbard. Between the two of them they will with the help of Jean Gagliolo and Sal Furfari be pouring about twenty Austrian wines that covers the whole gambit of what Austria personifies magnificently : sparkling, dry reds, roses and whites as well as sweet wine, too : from grapes that run the spectrum of flavor prfiles ( many indigenous ) : Gruner ( green ) Veltliner, Roter ( red ) Veltliner, Samling, Welschriesling ( has nothing to do with the Riesling grape at all! ), Muskateller, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, for the whites  ; and for the reds : Saint Laurent, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and more. In all with Richard Fitzgerald of Republic-National Imports we will be pouring about twenty-five Austrian wines on this Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 from 5:30-8:30PM. Join us.        2) RUSSELL'S Reserve Rye 6 Yr-Old Kentucky Bourbon Rye Whiskey ( $39.99 , 90% , 750ml ) is something that we actually tasted with Jimmy Russell when he himself came here last year and spent 2-3 hours here tasting one week afternoon with our customers lucky enough to stop by. It's quite excellent.
       3) BACARDI 'S " Ron Solera " ( $19.99, Tradicion Orgullo, 750ml bottle, 40% Alc. By Volume, Hecho en Mexico  ) ... good to have this " new " rum from BACARDI here with us now. Nice gift package, too.

WINES/ PLUM WINES  FROM GREG SIEBERT & TONY QUINN -

     PLUM WINES :

       1) Plum Wine from HAKUTSURU ( $14.99, 750ml bottle, 12.5% Alc By Volume, ) with other natural flavors is a product of Japan. Being sweet when we lived in Paris back in the 1970's they used to shave ice and put it into the glass with the plum wine in the Parisian restaurants. My wife and I loved it, really we did at the end of our meals.
       2) TOZAI PLUM Blossom Of Peace ( $19.99, 720ml, alc. 10.5% by volume )  has an almond aroma, ripe plum taste, semi-sweet  ... and can be enjoyed as an aperitif, digestif, or throughout the entire meal. " This " ume-shu " is crafted with premium Japanese sake and the region's highest quality ripe green plums, or " shiro-kaga ". You can also add ice, club soda and call it a spritzer or add bubbly and call it a Plum Belini.

     WHITE WINES :

       1) Viognier Estate-Grown from Paso Robles, California from RABBIT RIDGE ( $8.99, 750ml, alc. by 14.5% by volume ) is a nice addition to the other RABBIT RIDGE wines that we sell so well here on a daily basis. It's a specially nice wine for this cooler weather and will warm you a bit if you want to enjoy some outside at home or in a cafe.
     2) Chardonnay, unwooded - no oak , in stainless steel, this 2007 is the very last that we will ever have. This 2007 is selling for $13.99 a bottle and MORESON that makes it in Franschoek will no longer make it. So, if you have enjoyed it in the past then come and get some before we have no more.
    3) Torrontes 2009 Reserva from BODEGA TAMARI in Argentina's La Rioja region north of Mendoza ( $15.99 ) is showing really nicely now. It's a perfect 3rd day of Spring wine and one that will warm you all just a wee little bit as the weather starts to climb above the fifties and into the sixties and even the seventies. Cheers. It's also available in a Malbec.
    4) A complex White Blend of Grapes, 2009 JEZEBEL Blanc Oregon white is like a really nice wine from France's Alsace region - more super-rich and super-charged. This one really delivers more than the $19.99 that we are asking. Wine-maker Sara Shaw tasted me on it about two months ago when she visited Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits for the very first time. What a pleasure that was to get caught-up again on all the excellent DAEDALUS wines of Oregon. Many of them are now here on our shelves.

  RED WINES :

    1) Zinfandel XYZ ZIN Vine Aged Series 2007 ( $15.99 ) is made with grape vines that are a minimum of ten years of age or more. We had our rep Tom open it last week here for you on over the weekend and it showed beautifully. It's from a great vintage in California and showing well especially with a meal to flesh out the flavors of this wine that is best with food. It's a welcome addition here in the store.
    2) " Les Auzines " CUVEE HAUTES TERRES 2008 Grand Vin Du Languedoc Corbieres ( $16.99 ) is a blend of Rhone grapes like Cinsault and Mourvedre - organic and quite a flavorful, solid and stylish dry red with cascading flavors to entice anyone bear out of it's winter slumbers.
    3) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Kakheti ( $18.99 ) from TELIANI VALLEY ( 13% Alc. By Volume ) is a favorite here. Made in the country of Georgia it's one of the regular wines that we sell here and which many of our customers have already tried. Come check it out - you will be surprised. Cheers.
   4) Dry Red Blend called " Point Break " 2007 ( $22.99 ) from the LONGBOARD Vineyards is showing really well. When wine-maker Oded was here a couple of weeks ago here in the store and then later at his Ardeo Wine-Maker dinner on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 it was showing really well in both places. I know, I went to the dinner at Ardeo and it was one of the nicest evenings and meals that I have had in a long time. Enjoy some of it now - it will be great when you start grilling outside.
   5) Pinot Noir from Califirnia's Alexander Valley and made by the LONDER Vineyards. It sells for $32.99 a bottle and once that it is open for between and hour and two hours it starts to shine and perform at such an unimaginable level of flavors fully open and rounded, completely fleshed-out and so nice on the tongue and on the palate. The whole mouth fills with it's tastes and one is calmed, relaxed and immediately satisfied or at least teased and pleased and a willing and eager participant! Cheers.

COME SEE WHAT ELSE WE HAVE UP OUR SLEEVES, WE ALL HAVE TO BE MAGICIANS TODAY. THERE IS SO MUCH TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL.

I AM CONCERNED as you may have noticed in the header above about what is going on with our wines, especially large-production ones, and I want to have more transparency from these large groups as to what they are adding to the wines consumed and why?

IT STAND TO REASON that if they have more than a hundred or so essences of fruit flavors like Strawberry and Raspberry that are added to drinks to give us the sensation of drinking those fruits that other additives are being introduced to a grape to do the same thing on some level or another. I understand that many additives are allowed, I heard 50 as a number but that seems high. My point is that any number that is allowed should be talked about and explained as I would like to know why they are necessary at all? Let us start an open conversation about this, it is vitally important, it really is.

I DO NOT WANT TO ALARM, just start a meaningful conversation, have more transparency about all of this. As I learn more I will share it here with you all. I am all about transparency, even if it results in difficult conversation. You may expect me, us to be truthful here, as much as we possibly can be, with you all. It is hard as no one talks about any of this, as itf it is all a necessary evil and we must simply accept. Well, I am not about simply accepting, I want to know more, I want to know why, and I want to share this with you as I discover more.

WE HAVE St. PATRICK'S DAY this Thursday, March 17th : this is very exciting as I bring a 4-pack of MURPHY'S Imported StoutDraught-Style, with 14.9Fl. It will be a special treat, I like the taste very much. I really like corned beef as well, mmmmmmmm good!

IT'S STILL So Exciting, Seeing Clearly R Shining Sparkling stars so clearly @ Night! 4 nights now in a row!

Tues. Primary Voting ALL DAY, what to enjoy tonight in drink and food as we all watch the returns?!? WE can and are thrilled be able to help you with the drinking part of this equation. Come by, our beer and wine refrigerators are filled with many choices to the max!

JOHN ( Jean-Olivier ) JUST CAME BY asking : " I need a red. " I responded : " What do you need it for? How will you serve it? What price is good for you? " John who's family is originally part-French ( John speaks French , he did, too, with me ) said simply : " It's a gift.  ... a Cotes du Rhone. Something simple, nice for sipping. " I walked him back to our Rhone sections and we went back-and-forth as I described the wines, showing him wines from the Costieres De Nimes, from Corbieres, from Languedoc and finally from Minervois.

JOHN QUICKLY PICKED UP on the fact that I love wine, and try many of the wines we sell here. I built up a confidence for him and we settled at the CAMPAGNE DE CENTEILLES 2010 Minervois bottles par Boyer Domergue, $17.99 a bottle, with 14.5% alcohol by volume. It was three dollars more than the $15 he wanted to spend. I had shown him wines at $11.49, $13.49 and another at $17.99, I wanted to work withing his price range. But, as he said, it was a gift and this Minervois is a 2010 and showing really well.

I TOLD JOHN : " I do not want to lie to you, all these wines would benefit and show better with some crackers, bread or cheese, pate , too. " We will see. I hope John comes back and gives me a report on this gift of the CAMPAGNE DE CENTEILLES. Cheers, nice to meet you John.

THIS IS A Really Fast-Pased Time, as we all lnow, and so one of the big excitements here as I walked in earlier was that Santos cleaned, waxed our floors , and on Facebook I posted some pictures of how good the full stretch, the length of the store is, FABulous, really impressive. This morning's sunshine came in through our front here and bounced off our floors and was spectacular, really stunning, you could follow the sun on the floor like a path, looked great. Check them out.

I HAD FUN WALKING EARLIER these shiny waxed floors of ours as I picked out different items to bring to your attention for tonight's primary election returns of both Democrats and Republicans,... and you may enjoy them throughout the week as well.

BEER From Santos :

     1) ' Le Merle " Saison Belgian-Style Farmhouse Ale, from the American Artisan Series , from the NORTH COAST Brewing Company, On Special for $10.99 a 4-pack of 12-ounce bottles, with 7.9% alcohol by volume, from Fort Bragg, California.

     2) " Seclusion " IPA from NEW PLANET Brewing is 'new, and crafted to remove gluten ", a 6-pack of 12-ounce cans with 4.9% alcohol by volume, come check this out and see how it tastes and feels on your tongue and in your mouth, and how it is absorbed and received by all your senses?!? A fun project, a great task that will please and reward many. Cheers.

LIQUEUR/ LIQUOR From Jagir :

     1) ' Mahina Coco ' Coconut liqueur from CLEMENT, a French Caribbean liqueur, this is a splendid Creole delicacy of white rhum and macerated coconut, $25.99 a bottle, with 18% alcohol by volume, I like this quite a bit, a really fine, elegant flavor, smooth, silky coconut taste!

     2) ' Los Parrales ' Anniversario SINGANI from Bolivia, $38.99 a bottle, ' the spirit of altitude ' , is really pure, very fresh, so alive, leaves no headaches, really a very fine and tasty, yet unique taste in a spirit made at such a high altitude. Marina will be here to taste it this Friday from 5-8PM, join us and taste it for yourselves and see what you all think? It will be Marina's third time here tasting it. And the price has gone down since we started with her two years ago. Come and taste and see what all the fuss is about!

     3) Anejo Tequila of Agave, called CORAZON, made from 100% Agave, $54.99 a bottle, with 40% alcohol by color. Besides the smooth and intense flavors I am mezmerized by the color, less-filtered, leaves more of the taste and the character in the bottle, and the bottle-shape, too is really special.

     4) The Distillers Edition of GLENKINCHIE , The Edinburgh Malt, a Single Malt Scotch Whisky, On Special for $109.99 a bottle, with 43% alcohol by volume, this refined and distinct flavor comes in part from being double-matured in Amontillado casks-wood ... here the whisky has a sophisticated balance between sweet and dry, with a malty depth and showing of this lovely lowland character to the max! Cheers, worth every hard-earned penny of yours.

I STEPPED OUTSIDE TO CLEAR my thoughts and walked down to the end of our block just now to Macomb Street and Connecticut Avenue NW, , 20008 , and looked down by Ardeo and spotted a dirty penny. I decided to walk back and pick it up, brought it back, washed it off, and it is still pretty dirty and the image of Lincoln is scraped up badly now, the other side with the Lincoln Memorial is also tarred black, shiny and matted, two great contrasts, I cannot make out the vintage, glad I have it, a lucky charm for me today as we start to decide who will follow in all our older president's footsteps tonight! I might have to wash this penny again, saving and investing pennies, building up from there.

WHAT FOLLOWS below is an old store email that I wrote and sent in 2011 was it? Read and enjoy it and check out current availability and pricing? Thanks,  ...

being a wine-guy I think of wine first and would enjoy myself more of the others if only I had some space left over after the wines that I enjoy - only there is never any room. Sad, I know : but I do love my wines, really I do. And last night I enjoyed some of the Aussie PIKE'S 2006 Shiraz that our local rep gave me a bottle to enjoy back in December 2009. I was supposed to enjoy it during the holidays and they came and went and so did the snowstorm of the century and it just seemed like the right thing for me to enjoy with my leg of lamb that I made for my family on President's Day and just before the Winter Olympics started again with the Men's Skateboard Cross I think it is called? The wine needed quite a bit of time to shed it's monumental, columned firmness and steel and reveal more of it's interior which it began to do about an hour after I opened it. Really it was quite excellent well into the second hour of being unscrewed as it a Stelvan-closure and does not have a cork.

SPEAKING OF STELVAN CLOSURE some of you may know Sydney Moore Margolis that used to own the Mayflower Wines & Spirts back in the 1980's? She asked me the other day to speak about Stelvan-closure versus cork? There are two points to consider between Stelvan-closure and cork finishes to a bottle of wine:
       1) Will a wine age with Stelvan-closure? The jury is still out on that as yet. Nothing is conclusive as yet on that as the seal is pretty much air-tight and so if no air gets in at all how may the wine inside age?
       2) Is the wine with Stelvan-closure and not a cork finish any brighter and fresher? Experiments have been done on this with bottles coming from Europe of the very same wine and vintage on the same container and then judged together. The results are that the Stelvan-closure does in those cases at least preserve the freshness and brightness of the wine more than with a cork finish.
That's good as most wines with Stelvan-closure are meant to be drunk young anyway while they are still bright and fresh and lively and less-evolved.

WE ARE JUST THIS WEEK STARTING to pick up the many pieces as you know that last week with the " snowstorm of the century " here in Washington D.C. that it was a struggle in itself just to cross either Macomb  or Ordway Streets or to use the parallel service street between the two : one took their lives into their own hands in trying to accomplish these simple tasks that we often take completely for granted.

WE WERE THRILLED TO BE HERE AND OPEN every day except the first Saturday ( the 5th, 2010 ) when the first snow storm hit us in a big way. Sorry for that : we would have been here if we could have. But we were prepared for the second " big storm " on Wednesday February 10th, 2010 and were pleased to discover that for many of you we were your destination point as you ventured into the elements to come and stock-up here. I decided to sleep-over in Cleveland Park on both the 9th and the 10th so as to be here with Santos, Chris and Nelson. It was quite the thrill to walk down here from the Kennedy Warren where I slept like a baby on the 9th : I was walking into the howling winds that swept white sheet after sheet of thin yet numerous snowflakes that were unrelenting and melting quickly and constantly on the touch of my skin and making me bristle with energy and alertness each and every time ...

     DINNERS :
       1) @ Dino on Thursday, Marvh 4th, 2010 with owner/winemaker of the L'Espinase Rhone wines : Jean-Marc Espinases Rhone reds of Rouge Bleu and Mistral. Call Dean and Kay at Dino for more info and come meet Jean-Marc here before the dinner from 5-7 PM and taste these two excellent red Rhones. The Mistral really impressed me yesterday when our rep Charles brought it by to taste with Chris and I. It was really quite spicy and earthy and fleshy and tasty all in one. I could have easily enjoyed a full glass here if it were not for all that we have to do constantly!
Jean-Marc just put us on his web page and a lady called me earlier yesterday morning wanting to know more about what wines we would be tasting, and if the rose was available yet? I loved that, really I did - the power of the internet forges on ....

     2) @ RASIKA Flavors Of India & HIRSCH Winery : Owner and Winemaker David Hirsch will be on hand for this 5-Course Dinner with 5 wines. It's quite the production! The menu just reads and reads and reads more and more and more to offer one to titilate and inspire/fire/desire - all the great bells and whistles that one could want ... $200 , includes tax and gratuity. Call : 202-637-1222 to reserve.> Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at 7:30 PM.
