EARTH DAY , EARTH NIGHT , Earth is our planet our home our gift that we pass on to our children hopefully in the best shape possible, as it is what gives us our ability to exist and to be. Earth Day and Science Day were celebrated here all week last week, and the march on the Mall was a big success and we had many customers returning from it very pleased to have been a part of it. Loved seeing their smiles here as they stopped to make their purchases and to sample the fine wines ( and to meet owner - winemaker Alice Bonaccorsi of her own winery in Mt. Etna, Sicily called Azienda Agricola ALICE BONACCORSI with wine importer Robert Kennedy here, too!
WOW, as I was typing these last few words Robert Kennedy walked in and so we started to talk about Marianna's visit this Saturday from her own winery PIETRAVENTOSA in Puglia, Italy, that will be wonderful, really special! What a treat. Marianna makes great wines from the Primitivo grape in reds and one fabulous dry rose, too.
THIS IS A CLOSE and winderful wine community here and everyone just started showing up , one after the other, Narayan that is scheduled to taste here this Friday, Sotiris Bafitis that was just here this past Friday tasting with you all, Doug that is Robert Kennedy's best friend and was here to say " hi ! " and get together with Robert, then Dianna Richer came with her French supplier from Terrisson Wines, Benjamin Menouret, ... and we met, chatted, took a group picture and here I am now with Sotiris talking Greek wines that are missing from our shelves and so we need an infusion of them here PRONTO that will arrive here this Friday, April 28th, 2017.
SO : this email will be more casual than most and I will discuss some of the issues about wine that are ' near-and-dear ' to me.
TRANSPARENCY : there is none on a large scale.
1) The larger companies that sell wine that do not even own vineyards or have wineries, that buy up wine or grape must and blend and add to it are :
     1) dumbing us all down.
     2) putting many additives into the living grape juice that will become their version of wine, BUT , that tastes NOTHING to me like fresh grape unfermented juice, that ...
- destroys the feeling of drinking something alive and honest, that has both strengths and weaknesses, that is not ' fixed ', changed, altered, muted, dulled, bulked-up, put on steroids I like to say.
     3) we do not need more cute labels that have NOTHING at all to do with the liquid inside the bottle. Nothing wrong with labels that attract, but get the wineries to put on the labels what they are adding to the grape must-juice? Let us know what dead chemicals and additives are being included to ' fix ' into ONE TASTE- a taste that , to me is undrinkabel. That taste tastes to me like ...
- cardboard, like wet straw, like a taste I cannot decipher, that reminds me nothing of real wine that has been fermented and become wine and that has it's strengths and its weaknesses, and is what it is, not altered to be ...
- an international taste ...
-to taste like every other taste that is now called wine ...
- to be international so everyone can appreciate it.
BUT : What are they tasting, what are they appreciating?
3) Many ' new ' wine drinkers have not tasted anything but what is being sold now everywhere, in every grocery store, every supermarket, ever club that offers a few known labels at low prices. These markets,chain stores are offering inexpensive prices on these brand name wines, and are often coming out with their own labels, and sometimes those labels are the same wine-juice that are sold under more recognized labels, and yet many do not know this.
4) What is sold as wine today often is also a blend that includes grape juice-turned-into-wine from many places on earth ...
-like some Chilean wine blended with California grapes.
-some Australian wine blended with California wine,..
- some labelled " American ' that are being sold. for example at the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, that are most all made from grape juice purchased in California, Washington Sate, or New York, maybe even Virginia?
- confusing all of this at best.
5) Tell us where the grape-juice-wine is coming from?
6 ) Tell us what we are really drinking?
7) Tell us why the additives are being added into living grape juice-wine?
- to what purpose? what do these additives really add or fix or alter or change?
8) Why does the Pinot Noir from California taste so beefy, so hearty, so robust, so thick, so dark in color?
-tell us and write on the label that , in reality, 5-10%, up to 15% has been added to that Pinot Noir to ' bulk it up ' so that it tastes good to many that are dining in a steak house?!?
9) Tell us where the grapes originally come from?
- tell us on labels that many if not almost all of the grape varities are originally from Europe and not from Argentina, for example, where everyone thinks Malbec comes from and not from France.
- I am knit-picking at some of this, I know, but I am trying to make many points, and paint a larger picture for you all that is confusing and never or hardly ever told, spoken, referred to, acknowledged.
- we are all running scared, we do not need to be.
10) Pricing is key, we all have budgets, we get that, really we do.
11) We thank you here for your business.
- without you here we could not exist without your support. Thank you.
- but I feel the tremendous need to share some of this.
12 ) Boundaries are no longer acknowledged or respected. Everyone wants to be everything to everyone, and so the larger retail outlets ( including those that mail to you ) are doing a bit of everything, offering a bit of everything to you all, ...
13) they are not specializing in anything much anymore, just offering whatever they think they can sell to you?

14) SO : let us have some more transparency in the products we buy and enjoy.

15) Let us, too, understand as best as possible our priorities? What is most important? What do we want most? 
16 ) I often think the phrase : " it's good enough. " We all settle so often.
17) We are here to shake things up, to ..
- give your your options ...
- to respect your intelligence and not try and dumb you down.
- to listen to you, ...
- to work with you, your needs . desires, ...
- to try and stretch you some to include ' new ' experiences, as many as you will allow us to offer to you.
ALL IS WELL if we try and understand more of what is really going on, try and understand what we have as options, what we are buying, what we are tasting in this case here at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits.
WE WILL DO everything we can to be honest and transparent with you, to explain and to help you make the choices that best suit your needs.

NEWS : a tense time this week with our government budget and we have plenty of things to help you get through the stress and the strain of it all.
MANY PEOPLE come to visit and to taste, to share, to introduce, and so I want to take the time here to thanks Barry Dodds , Ambassador to the FREEMARK ABBEY Napa California wines for coming by and tasting, ... for Michael Honig the President of the HONIG Vienyard and Winery for coming by and personally tasting an assortment of his wines, too from the excellent Sauvignon Blanc  to his Bartolucci Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 : all treats and well-made.
I AM MISSING a Pinot seminar and tasting today of Oregon wines, and that saddens me, but it is important for me to be here for you all, too when you need advice, just like Graham needed as his good friend that loves southern Rhone wines is coming by to visit, and so I recommended a Chateaneuf-Du-Pape made by a female winemaker that Jayde tatsed me on that blew me away for it's seriosness, heartiness, complexity, power, meaty balls, ,,, the DOMAINE GALEVAN , $57.99, 2011, with 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre, with 14.5% alcohol : this packs a big muscular kiss on your tongue, senses and palate : enjoy with a meal, open and let breethe almost two hours before enjoying with a meal now.

1) " Laika ' 2013 Gruner Veltliner from the OLD MISSION PENNINSULA in Michigan, $18.99 is a real treat : developed, flavorful, chill and serve now : a treat!

2) Poulet & Fils ' Tradition ' Methode Dioise Ancestrale from France's Clairett de Die region of the Rhone valley, this fruity sparkling white, $15.99, chilled nicely is a perfect foil now for this damp , and cold today! Lovely.
3) DAO DOC Portugal dry red Colheita Selecionada, a blend of 40% Alfrocheiro, 40% Tinta Roriz and 20% Touriga Nacional : a robust boquet, deep dark color and yet a an elegant tatse well-knit and polished that is best with some food! At $13.49 this is another Portuguese steal!
3) Karmena a dry Turkish red blend from Anatolia, from DIREN , 2014, of 30% Syrah, 30% Okuzgozu, 15% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Bogazkere, too : with 13% alcohol by volume, I like the honesty, the integrity, the trueness to these wines and when paired with food, chilled slightly to focus and energize their flavors - then they blossom and are a treasure!
4) 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa's Wellington district, David brought me his DIEMERSFONTEIN red, $21.99, and I loved it for it's polish, fruit-forward, silk and steel mesh that are a treat to sip and enjoy with a meal, yes! Yes si oui a Big YES to this.

What Follows Below is an old store email that I wrote and sent back in April 2013 just after the Boston marathon tragedy and Earth Day ... read it if you have the time. Cheers, TONY 4/25/2017
EARTH DAY Yesterday, and glad to see that there was more focus on it this year from all that I have heard and read recently. I was able to work, weed, rake, cut back ornamental grasses and to mow the lawn that sprung up with everything in shades of bright baby greens everywhere and all needing my immediate attention. Oh, and the bird baths got lots of fresh water on two days in a row and the robins, sparrow, cardinals and more all appreciated this from the flutter of their rapid wings and hops in the water before flying off as quickly as they came. Nice.
WE ARE PICKING UP THE PIECES still from the Boston Marathon tragedy last week and that has been really hard to bear. Lots being written about it. I spoke to one of our customers that was here that is working on sorting through everything that has happened so suddenly and so unexpectedly and what I took away from him in our brief conversation that was very positive : he talked about what we could learn from this to avert this happening again.
THEN THE FLIGHT DELAYS I read about this morning from the effects of the sequestration set into motion recently by Congress : lots to deal with. I hear on MPR Radio yesterday talk about this and one of those that called in said that she was just going to be even earlier arriving at the airport to be sure that everything would work as smoothly as possible on her end, expecting the worst and happy when the situation was better than she anticipated!
I DRANK SOME fine 2005 Italian " Super Tuscan " Merlot on Sunday evening with our neighbor that needed some " adult company " after having been with her three children all day. We were happy to have her come and chat and the wine really had lovely overtones of tobacco , tar and leather and creamy spice overtones. It was a food wine and it tasted great with our meal. I am not mentioning the name now as we do not have any to sell anymore and I do not want to tease you all.
HAVING SAID THIS we do have some of the " original " Super Tuscan Carmignano 2009 " Piaggia - Il Sasso  " from MAURO VANNUCCI, $40.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume, from in Poggio a Caiano, Tuscany that pretty much blew Eon and me away when we first bought this 2009 vintage to offer you all. This is a great and a delightful, wonderful splurge for a nice moment.
IT WILL WARM YOU today with this breeze and cool, colder weather that is hesitant to do anything too quickly and is supposed to warm up today and be in the 60's? Are we there yet? I am here inside in our office but will go check soon. ANYWAY: this wine from Carmignano , the " Il Sasso " is a spectacular, classic, world-class Italian red that must be tasted to be believed. Cheers.
RAVI WAS JUST TALKING TO ME, EVERYBODY in the beer, liquor and wine business has been talking , EVERYONE about the Costco that just opened here in Washington D.C. : there's lots of changes, the BEFORE and AFTER of Costco and it has already been very hard on many as they muscle their way into Washington D.C. and start trying to call all the shots here. I wish I could feel good about what I am hearing and saying, I have only heard negative things so far, and really only from people in our business. It is quite upsetting and I know that this is only one side. I do feel, however, that I should let it be known that like many big companies they are shaping a whole new " scene " here that. from everything that I hear and see so far would be happy to have none of us here that have been here for so many years now serving you as well as we could and can and still hope to do so for many years to come. ...  
IT'S SHADES OF  the little pharmacy up the street across from the Connecticut Avenue entrance to our National Zoo that has been effected greatly ( also been there for forever ) by the larger drugstore chains from everything that I hear but that no one wants to admit to, or let known that they spoke of it for fear of recrimination from lawyers and so on. Upsetting. TIMES, they sure " are a changin' " to quote Bob Dylan. What can we all do?
BUT HEY, It's Time Now to talk about some beer for this weather. What does Santos have up his sleeves for you all ?  :
     1)  KULMBACKER Edelberg Legendares KULMBACKER Pils ( On Special for $13.99 a 6-pack, Scho handlich, from Kulmbach, Germany, since 1516, Bavaria ) : I went to their Facebook page and " liked " them and they have already responded on our Facebook page. I asked them for more information and hopefully they will include that soon.
This is, however, A PERFECT BEER with only 4.9% alcohol by volume  when the temperatures decide to finally rise as they surely must?!And NOW FOR FUN : the ingredients are : acqua, malto d"orzo, luppolo, estratti di luppolo ... and in yet another language  :  Zutaten :  Wasser, Gerstenmalz, Hopfen, Hopfenextrakt. I love this : Where are you Gabrielle when I need you? Come and try this delightful Pils.
     2)  TROUBLE DOUBLE IPA Brewed For Us by FOUNDERS Brewing ( On Special for $13.99 a 4-pack of 12-ounce bottles,  9.4% alcohol by volume, Grand Rapids, MI, ) : " An Imperial IPA that was brewed to turn your world upside down. Hops will have you coming and going ...  ".
     3) Hommel Ale from POPERINGS ( On Special for $9.99 a 1 Pt. 9.4Fl. Oz bottle, 7.5% alcohol by volume, product of Belgium, by NV Van Eecke, B-8978 Watou ) : looks and tastes like the real McCoy! Looks also like it would be PERFECT for this cooler weather now. Cheers and enjoy.
     4) Black Mocha Stout from HIGHLAND Brewing Company ( On Special for $10.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, from Asheville, North Carolina,, since 1994 ) : " ... having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor . ...  ". Taste it, great to have it with the other flavors, too from North Carolina!
     1)  EFFEN Cucumber and Vanilla Flavored Vodka from Holland ( On Special for $29.99/ regularly $33.99 a bottle, 37.5% alcohol by volume, go to : for more recipes and ideas ) : " Expertly distilled from wheat grain. Deliciously enhanced with natural cucumber flavors. Cheers.

WINES from MICHEL and from TONY :
     1) 2010 Sauvignon Blanc from JARDIN Stellenbosch, South Africa ( $16.99,14% alcohol by volume, Integrity and Sustainability, synergy between soul and soil ) : " ... produced by California-trained Gary and Kathy Jordan on their Stellenbosch property ". Michel and I both liked this quite a bit.
     2) Viognier 2011 from Virginia from STONE MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS ( $19.99, 12.5% alcohol by volume, Dyke, VA. ) : located in an area known as Bacon Hallow. Really showing nicely. Had our local rep David of Grappoli Imports pour it here recently on one of our weekend wine-tastings.
     3) 2007 Marsannay " Les Echezots " from the DOMAINE BALLARIN & F ( usually the F would end with " ils " boys, in this case since there are four daughters and no sons it would end : " illes " girls! I like that, I like it a lot : Go Ladies! )... a dry red 100% Pinot Noir red Burgundy that still needs a couple of hours to open up ( use the aerator above for $15 ) and then enjoy it for it's lovely medium-to-light-bodied taste and flavors of bright strawberries and cherries. It's so silky and fine, so elegant. On Special while it still lasts for $22.99 a bottle : regularly $36.99 a bottle. A GREAT BURGUNDY STEAL! Try some, treat yourselves.
     4) Cote de Nuits-Villages " Vieilles Vignes - Old Vines " 2005/ great year in Burgundy- from the DOMAINE HENRI NAUDIN-FERRAND 100% dry red Pinot Noir by law ( On Special for $22.99 a bottle, regularly $45.99 a bottle while supplies last, Margny-les-Villers, 21700 NuitsSaint-Georges, Burgundy, France ) : smells like a strong-scented-perfumed barnyard! It's intense, it let's you know that it is there! The taste is mush rounder, fuller, more appealing and I like it quite a bit. It's a food wine. As Jim Reeves of Comete wines that was pouring it here this past weekend - we both thought it would be a good red meat wine: it's got that presence and flavor and boldness and needs food to " flesh " it out. Dinner was grand, and as I told Justin Taylor the owner that what made the evening for me so special was how impressive, balanced, focused, iteresting, tasty, good character and definition to each of the wines, and meeting him, too : the rest at Del Friscos Double Eage Washington DC was icing on the cake! 
From the bone-dry Alsace-Style Riesling to the first Cabernet Sauvignon, onot the second and third Cabernet, then the two Shiraz reds ( my least favorite of the whole evening was the first Shiraz - otherwise the highest praise indeed for the others. And the only reason I was not big on the first Shiraz is that, to me, it was balanced but not as distinguished as the others. And a secret in some of the reds : the eucalyptus accents! ).
The wines include : The Pioneer, The Visionary, St. Andrews, and Jarman. Cheers mate!
The food, too was great. Chef Scott came out to say ' hello ", and between the seafood and the beef it was an incredible combination of these WAKEFILED Estate wines from Australia's Clare Valley ( called TAYLORS Wines there ) and the food. A real special moment for all of us.

     I'M TRYING TO SOUND NEW HIP AND ORIGINAL and intriguing here so that you wonder what I am saying and open this email! I wrote and posted this old store email shown below on April 20th, 2010! Seven years later I am still aware of all of this!
     IT IS EARTH DAY on the 22nd! It should be every day and evey night : without our earth we are nothing as we cannot exist yet anywhere else but here on this incredible earth of ours. What a treat, an honor, a privilege, a delight, an adventure, magical, wonderful, special and mystical, too!

     SO : We devote this whole week to talking about, acknowleging, appreciating, working to make and keep a better, cleaner, less-poluted, more healthy earth, planet, land, seas, skies, streams, lakes, oceans, mountains, hills, caves and more! What a paradise we have in many places, others we need to work on, and here we have many products that celebrate , embrace, work towards, do, participate, and share products that celebrate and disturb our earth as little as possible : yah!

     Hope everyone had a great happy Passover or Easter. Sunday sure was beautiful, it was nice to be outside much of the day for my family, we enjoyed the flowering and blooming shrubs, azaleas, dogwoods, redbuds, wygelias, and so much more, as well as weather that made it so easy to enjoy all of this.
     IT WAS ALSO Spring Break for many and so many of you rushed past us, back and forth, heading to the National Zoo. What a sight that is to behold.

The taste on the palate is the opposite and more welcome and soothing and so great when combined and paired with a meal.
     I had leftover leg-of-lamb just now with wild rice and fresh asparagus shoots, and this ' Nature ' would have been wonderful, a real treat!With 14% alcohol by volume, from DAO, certified organic by SATIVA, I highly recommend this Portuguese red : a winner, a classic, a great value, too!

You may be surprised from now on as perhaps I have gotten into too much of a sure-thing and you already know what that is and so don't feel it necessary to check what I spend the better part of a Tuesday writing here for hopefully your benefit.
    ALL IS GOOD and we do have some pretty great brut/brute/tasty/authentic/original and VALUE wines as well as beers and spirits. Ravi, Santos, Chris and I are always on the look-out for something either    " new and exciting "  or of   "  true value "   or both combined into one for your drinking enjoyment and ease on your pocket book! There seem to be still some really great values for us here in the Washington D.C. area.

     3) " Katz, Gentile " soft dry white Alsace French white blend from KLUR ( $21.99 ) is unbelievably magnificent and a treat to drink with or without food.
     4) Dry Vidal Blanc 2008 ( $11.49 ) from New York's Finger Lakes region and made by STANDING STONE is a great outdoors white when you grill and serve some nicely-seasoned  warm-weather foods that may be casual or fancy. This dry white Vidal will stand up to lots of flavor in your meals.
          SPARKLING : 1 -
     1) M. LAWRENCE " Wet " Sparkling Wine sec/dry ( $22.49, 1350 of 2508 bottles, batch #5, 12%alc. by volume,, produced and bottled by L. MAWBY , Suttons Bay, MI ) is named after this quote that is on the bottle label : " Hooded copper eye, bolf fruited cologne, rich favoured flesh, not sweet, not dry - but wet she is ". I don't know about you but ....
          ROSES : Dry, 5 -
     1) " Vitiano " from FALESCO in Umbria ( On Sale for $9.99 ), 2008 is a blend of five grapes I believe that includes Cab and Merlot and Sangiovese and this bottle is showing fabulously now. It's a real treat : needs to open slowly like a red as it is often over-chilled.
     2) LA BASTIDE SAINT DOMINIQUE 2009 ( $10.99 ) from France's Vin De Pays De Mediterranee ( estate-bottled ) has got great color and great flavor extraction. Nice.
     3) 14-18h Greek Peleponnisos 2009 dry Agiorgitiko rose ($15.99 ) has a great deep, dark and intense color - almost like a light red, and it sure does taste great as it warms and opens in the glass : just like the Vitiano. Jody Jackman had both open this past Friday.
     4) Vieilles Vignes / Old Vines dry Bourgogne FRench Pinot Noir rose ( $21.99 ) from the DOMAINE DU CHATEAU DE CHOREY is a study in understatement and elegance and finesse, starting with the refined color and into the middle taste and the lingering , silky-smooth finish. It's a marvel of efficiency and subtlety ...
     5) CHATEAU  " Les Valentines " 2009 Cotes Du Provence ( $24.99 ) ( estate-bottled ) has just become a favorite of owner Florence at Lavandou restaurant down the block from us and already there have been requests by our customers to buy some. So voila ! it's here now and we are thrilled to have some. Only two cases as it's very limited in availability. Don't delay , come get some now before it is too late.

          REDS -  Dry, 9 -

     1) Cahors 2006 Malbec/Tannat dry French Red Blend , " Tradition " ( $13.49 ), from the CHATEAU DE GAUDOU is finally back in stock by popular demand. We had Justin taste this out the other day with you all and we sold-out and have been waiting patiently for more. It's finally here again and well-worth the wait.
     2) " Les Boudalles " red 2009 dry Rhone blendfrom the DOMAINE BRUSSET ( $13.99 ) literally blew me away the other day when I tasted it. I re-tasted it several times to be sure I really loved it and I did and so I can't wait to try it once again. It's so vibrant and lovely and charming and pleasing all-in-one to my famished/thirsty palate - a BIG YES to this one!
     3) St. Nicolas De Bougueil 2007 100% Cabernet Franc from FREDERIC MABILEAU ( $19.49 ) in the Loire Valley of France is classic, balanced and focused and flavorful Cabernet Franc at it's best and in this case perhaps most attractive form/outfit, too?
     4) " Pojo Del Ruspo " 2005 ( $15.99, great year ) Sangiovese/Sangiovetto Grosso grapes from BARBI in Umbria, Italy, is showing really well now, medium-to-light-bodied and such a great choice with many warm-weather meals. The owners have been here and it's always sold well for us. Great to still have the 2005 vintage here.
     5) STEELE " Old Vine Zin " 2007 from the Pacini Vineyard in Mendocino County has never been more seductive and pleasing as this 2007 : and it's only $17.99 a bottle. What a deal! Jeff was just here tasting it with you all : he's Jed Steele's right-hand man and has worked with him since 1985.
     6) " Bench Rock " 2004 dry red Washington State red blend from OKANOGAN ( $18.99 ) is medium-bodied, quite lean and a bit angular and spicy and best with food. We bought extra to get the Spice under $20 a bottle and Chris Barker really wanted to have some on hand to sell to you all. It will be great at a barbecue.
     7) 2007 ( great southern Rhone vintage in France ) Lirac from Eric Bonnet of the RESERVE SAINT DOMINIQUE estate( $19.99 ) is still very young and needing another 3-6 years of cellaring in my opinion. It's a shame to drink it now as it will clearly be so much better later. Drink this property's excellent Ventoux red 2009 ( $13.99 ) that I have already mentioned while you wait for this Lirac to mature gracefully.
     8) ARIZONA STRONGHOLD " Nachise " dry red blend of mostly Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Mourvedre from Cochise County, Arizona ( $28.49 ) is drinking beautifully once that it has an hour or more to open up and show it's mettle. Medium-bodied and balanced and quite a lot of lilting, breathing, moving nuances that will rock your cares away. It's worth the money. Try it on for size when you have a tasty meal next time with grilled white meats, game, and well-seasoned meals that includes peppers, too ... Great label as well.
     9) ARIZONA STRONGHOLD 2008 " Mangus " dry red 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Sangiovese/ 9% Merlot from vignerons/wine-makers Eric Glomski and Maynard Keenan in Arizona's Cochise County ( $28.49 ) was my personal favorite of the two ( as I believe it was also Chris Barker's ). I really liked the more tightly-knit flavors here and I am thrilled to have it as well as the " Nachise" Syrah-based red. These will be fun discoveries for many of you and I think that you will be delighted to have tried them just as we were. Cheers!

IN FACT it was a bust week as we had nightly activities here all week long.
WE HOPE YOU are enjoying our weekly / nightly tastings as we try and share more of the wonderful spirits' flavors - savors that are out there and available now to all of us more than ever before.
IT IS AMAZING how much is now readily available at our fingertips : a whole mucho mas beaucoup grande lot of lotsa choices.
SO WE TRY and accomodate so many start-up enterprising individulas with products that deserve our recognition, and we provide a tasting platform for many of them : owners, winemakers, distillers, cider-makers, you name it!

SO : We had our great 2nd BIG-THEME Beer-Tasting here last Thursday, and even considering that the heavens poured off-and-on all that day and some of the night we had a great crowd and turned many heads by tasting some exciting ' new beers ' from Canada and Michigan, as well as many old favoroites like HEAVY SEAS, ABITA, BROOKLYN and the cider BOLD ROCK. It is always great to make new discoveries and to taste the current flavors available from the houses you already know?

LAST WEEK I EXPERIMENTED with the format of our weekly Tuesday store emails and will continue to do so as I am at a stage in my wonderful life that is blossoming so broadly and beautifully and I am overflowing with so much to share with you all, as it is all interconnected, and all valid, relevant, essential.

1) French Cremant D'Alsace from Domaine PFISTER, $37.49, bright, rich, round, delightful, great bubbles, so much sunshine to offer - so much moonlight, too, a real treat! 
2) the Cremant D'Alsace Brut of HELEFRICH , On Special now for $24.99, even softer, rounder, more light and lulling and easy in this heat, yes!
3) The ' Luminescence ' brut methode traditionelle Loire Valley sparkling vin mousseux from the DOMAINE Des HERBAUGES , $19.99 , a drier, more tart and tangy Melon de Bourgogne, Chardonnay and Grolleau Gris blend here , more robust, gutsy, raw and sooooo ahhhlive ( I amde that word up ).
AND ...
with more herbed goat's cheese and StoneWheat crackers my wife, daughter and I also enjoyed some fine wines from South Africa that Ian and Melissa poured here from their own company RED WOLF Importers,
1) Mourvedre ( a French Rhone valley red grape variety that makes southern Cotes Du Rhone and Southwest French reds , as well as fine Spanish reds that they call by the name of Monastrell ), this delightful soft, bright silky expression of rose from South Africa's BABYLONSTOREN, $19.99 was a pure delight, too on Sunday night.
2) " Babel ' dry red 2015 Simonsberg, Paarl, South African mostly Mourvedre with some Bordeaux grapes, too, $21.99, was so smooth and bright having been opened like the rose already for two - three days! It had not lost anything, was even more soothing and blissful than when both Ian and Melissa poured it here last Friday night.
GRILLING LAST NIGHT was a treat as the weather was incredible, really special, so nice to be outside, the greening of trees and shrubs and everything ( sorry for the pollen! ), and no mosquitos anywhere to be seen ( the only surprise was my wife screaming later inside as we were getting ready to watch the classic old movie : " Nine To Five " : " there's a snake! ").
I RESCUED THE SNAKE and released it back into the wilds from where it came , a small snake, nothing to worry about.
ANYWAY : I was offering some Bulgarian red for us to try, from Andrew Stover pf the CHAMLIJA Paraskarasa dry red ( drank beautifully last night, really enjoyed it, so did my daughter and wife ), and I will ask Andrew about availability?
ON SATURDAY Andrew was here with Marin Atanasov , wine consultant of Fine European Wines / Brand Marketing OrganizationWorld Wines 2-6pm, and we tasted some of the ...
1) ORBELUS dry red " Hrumski ' ( Notions ) 2013, $19.99, a dry blend pf Syrah, Melnik 55, Mourvedre and Marselanwith 14% alcohol by volume. It is from the Thracian lowlands , it reminds me of a fine Austrian red with high acidity and some good body, firm, svelte, a fine food wine once chilled 40 minutes or so ... organic,
2) Pinot Noir by CHATEAU BURGOZONE from Bulgaria's northern border Cotes du Danube, $16.49, much lighter, some spice and acid to edge it , medium-to-light-bodies, a treat, a fun wine to chill , and with salmon or some appetizers, some lamb even, just a nice salad, ... another treat that we all enjoyed here on Saturday when both Marin and Andrew waxed poetic over it.
COME GET SOME of all of these, sooner than later, be proactive, ready, prepared, rewarded, rested, real and receptive : alliteration is the way to go for me these days.
HAPPY PASSOVER Today all, thanks for all your support and community.
I ENJOYED this past Friday when I went to Adas Synagogue and did a 4-kosher-wines wine-tasting for 60 or so young professionals there. I knew a handful, the others I got to meet and talk with through a wall of loud chatting all around us. It was fun, it was exciting, I had a microphone, and I blared both my heart and my soul into it as I cried to be heard! A great group, a party of six I saw later as I passed by Coppi's Organic restaurant here to pick up a pizza to take home to share with my wife and daughter : our dinner Saturday night : loved it.
SO : in the spirit of Passover when it is okay to get some and enjoy we still have some incredible bottles of 2010 CR CASTRA RUBRA, $35.49, ( produced with the help of French Bordeaux producer Michel Rolland ), this Bulgarian kosher for Passover dry red blend from the Thracian valley, ( 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc ), 14.5% alcohol by volume ... is a lovely medium-bodied yet robust, hearty mouthfulof food red, the food and the wine rounding each other out nicely! I had a saussage pizza at Coppi's on Friday night that would be amazing with this CASTRA RUBRA, really a great combo as the saussage was fiery and this would mellow that flavor and taste.
BEER & CIDER From Santos :
     1) " True Couple " Pear-Flavored Hard Apple Cider, craft-made, from the Standard Cider Company, from Washingtonville, NY, with 7% alcohol, $13.99 : a mouth-filling, fuller, more angular, tasty, accented - really nice with food!
     2) Steadman " Abbey Ale " from FLYING DOG, On Special for $15.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, with 8.7% alcohol by volume, come check out these abs , these beer muscles?!?
     3) " Mango Surprise " IPA , Ale brewed with Mango, from ARCADIA ALES ARCADIA Brewing Company, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, ... a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, with 6.5% alcohol by volume, we tasted this to great success this past Thursday at our 2nd BIG THEME Beer-Tasting!

WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW is an old store email I wrote and posted way back to April 2011 when my dear friend Sidney Moore Margolis passed away floating off to the sounds of Red House a Jimi Hendrik's song played here by a local black musician that played it so passionately and made me feel for certain that his guitar and words were carrying well Sidney my friend!

IT WAS a busy Saturday herethis past week as I arrived and started to set up for my weekly wine class of six wines from 11:30AM-1PM at $10 a person. More and more of you are getting the word and coming by and signing up here to spend an hour and a half with me. it's fun. I always tie into what we are doing with what we have been doing here recently as I want it all to be " organic " and taking advantage of all that I / we can offer you now as you are in the store with us and may want to buy something for the weekend, too. So this past Saturday I started my day with some Greek reds ( MITRAVELAS Estate Nemea 2009, $12.49, and the ESMIOS Nemea 2005, $18.99 ) , some kosher Lazio unoaked Chardonnay GABRIELLE ( $9.99 ) and the both the kiwi ( New Zealand wine ) of FROMM Marlborough 2005 off-dry Riesling ( On Special for $14.99, reg: $25.99 ) and the LA STRADA 2004 Pinot Noir Marlborough ( On Special for $19.99, reg: $44.99 ).It was quite the tasting. All the wine showed well. Sotiris Bafitis had been in on Wednesday tasting an assortment of the Greek wines and there was a little bit left in the bottles some I showed the group that, in fact, the wines were still enjoyable on Saturday with food. I explained how the wines had changed and what the differences were and that's how we got the show rolling.
I LET A NUMBER OF OUR REGULAR CUSTOMERS try the wines that I was tasting with the class. I would spot them as they came into the store and pour them a glass and then take it over quickly to them to try as they shopped. I would say that if they had any questions to simply let me know and that either I or Greg would help them. It's called juggling more than one thing at a time and it's always fun and a challenge to do so.
THIS CLASS WAS SLOW TO GET OFF THE GROUND as people were a bit late showing up and all of a sudden the store filled with customers and it was necessary to help all of them as they were assorting questions and had lots of questions for us. I had not seen Wendy for quite some time as her t.v. schedule is quite busy and she had gone to buy some things at Pet Smart. Afterward she had walked into Weygandt's a couple of store fronts in that same block and was studying the Austrian wine section when her friend came by and told her that she needed to come over to Cleveland Park Wines And Spirits. She asked if Tony Quinn was still there? And the rest is history and we were off to a roaring start with the wines of Austria. Wendy said that the selection was pretty impressive over at Wygandt's and I showed her our selection of four shelves. What fun, what a lot of excitement with Sarah and Jacob looking for their wines, too and both Greg and me breaking away to help all this mad rush of customers this past Saturday.
ALL IN AGOOD DAY'S WORK. It was fun to sell some of all the SALE wines between the Dolcetto D'Alba 2005 PODERI COLLA ( On Special for $12.99, reg: $22.99 ), the Barolo 2002 CONERNO FANTINO ( On Special for $34.99, reg: $55.99 ), the ESMIOS Moscofilero dry Greek white ( On Special for $13.99, reg: $15.49 ), the Martinsborough Pinot Gris 2007 ESCARPMENT ( On Special for $22.99, reg: $34.99 ) and many, many more. Come check them out. Greg and I have had them all open here recently and they are all showing quite well. Most are fully mature or close and they have all been lowered in price and properly stored to save you both money and time to cellar them yourselves. You can take them home and pretty much feel quite confident to enjoy them now and not feel like you are robbing the cradle by enjoying them before their best times.
I JUST GOT A CALL from our customer Geoff that told me about this past week's experience with our wines M De MONLUC Gros Manseng ( indigenous grape variety from southern France ) that was the " hit " of his dinner when served with two French cheeses : 1) Latour a blend of equal parts of Goat.Sheep and Cow milk ( a soft cheese ), and with 2) Etochi a French semi-hard , like a Petit Basque Geoff told me. He said that the MONLUC had " great clean fruit, not as sweet as a German wine ). Thanks Geoff for sharing. The M De MONLUC sells for $15.99 a bottle and we are thrilled to have more for you to pick up here tomorrow. Glad that your guests liked it so much, too.
WE HAVE MANY KOSHER For PASSOVER Wines Here : many of the $10-$15 a bottle from Israel, Italy, France, Spain and more. Hopefully we have something for everyone. This past weekend Franceen Khang of Palm Bay Imports was here tasting the dry wines of the RECANATI winery and we still have many of those at $11 a bottle. More kosher wines is coming our way tomorrow.
WE ALSO HAVE SOME VINHO VERDE Portuguese dry white wines ( a slight sparkle and lower alcohols, 9-10% ) coming our way tomorrow along with some fancier " top-flight " Vinho Verdees made with only the Alvarinho grape ( three types, all at around $24 a bottle for the creme de la creme. These wines do have a higher level of alcohol at around 12%. TODAY we just received the ENCOSTAS DO LIMA Vinho Verde ( $9.99 ) with a 10% alcohol by volume level. It's so amazingly rich and flavorful and complex and yet so appealing with the warmer weather like yesterday's ( in the mid to high eighties ) and yet costing so very little.
AND SPEAKING OF WINES RECENTLY TASTED : Regis our rep just brought us tastes of the LEROY red( 1999 ) and white ( 2000 )  burgundies : BOTH WERE AMAZING! Really great. He also brought us tastes of the Italian wines we already have on our shelves :  1) " Myrto " dry white blend 2009 from FORADORI ( $27.99, a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, and the other 40% a blend of Incrocio Manzoni which is a cross between a Renano Riesling-related grape and Pinot Bianco. It just shouted and crooned and spelled and drew and told stories and sweet melodies of so much fruit-forward, well-balanced/ well-proportioned youth and promise, vigor and almost undisputed universal charm and spell and appeal! Wow is all I have to say.  2) " Il Frappato " made from the red Sicilian grape variety called Frappato and made by VALLE DELL'ACATE ( $19.99). This 2009 is medium-to-light-bodied, got great tomato-cherry-toasty berry and herb and a bit of curative apothecary flavors sure to keep on in balance and ready for just about anything good. It's charming and so much like a rocker rocking one, soothing one ... AND LAST :  3) the 2008 " Notturno Sangiovese from DREI DONNA ( $21.99 )from Romagna, Italy is charming and classic and medium-bodied and with just enough of everything to keep one pleased and guessing for what is still to come?!? It's a beauty to enjoy now - showing really well at this moment in time.

DO I SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON WINES? Probably not, though wine has been one of the backdrops for me sharing & Learning So VERY MUCH with you all in the space of this long rectagle called Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits

PERHAPS I DON'T DEVOTE ENOUGH TIME  to the essence, the core, the inner, the true, the real, the most special, wonderful , meaningful, lasting parts of what we do here @CPWineSpirits?!? I try, it is hard to focus always on the core of things as we are all so stressed, pulled, driven, forced to finish for 5 minutes peace, those same 5 minutes that Mrs Large the animated hippo was trying to find in the children's story I read to ours way back when? Do any of you know that story, I love it! Mrs Large maybe got four and a half minutes peace in that story, happy for it she was,
I LISTENED THIS MORNING driving to work a cd that I bought and picked up last night called : JUDY COLLINS Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Any of you know it? I thoroughly enjoyed it, surprised myself, smiled, was pleased, was moved, was emotional, inspired, fired, engrossed.
IT ALL HAPPENED as I have been trying over time to find old music that once inspired me when I was in prep school and college and had more time for listening carefully and being so by the music swallowed whole and consumed in that moment!
I REMEMBER the album cover, I owned the actual vinyl of that Judy Collins album that was my very favorite of hers, that Stephen Stills played on, probably produced. I was hoping this cd was that same album, I do not think so. Any of you know it?
ANYWAY,  I decided to buy it from the Record Tape & Exchange, even though it might not be the one, I still wanted to see what I thought and felt once again, if anything? Would I be lost or numb to this music and this voice from my past?
I AM LOVING IT, and it built from song to song, a momentum that carried me along, an energy, an emotion, a lovely female voice , words that had so much depth and evoked so many scenes, images, tore at so many heart-strings. 
THE FIRST SONG hooked me line and sinker : " Hello Horray ", then " Who Knows Where The Time Gose " soothed and smiled me, yes, smiled me! I was beginning to feel back at home as at back at home in my teens and early twenties!
THE SONG That reall hooked me, however, was : " First Boy I LOved ". That was where I felt the guts, the raw nerves, the guuueral, the howl, the burn, the chafe, the commitment necessary from me : I had to respond, and I did.
THEN Leonard Cohen came along with his great lyrics in : " Bird On A Wire ", and that grounded, floored, elevated, elated, smiled me once again! When was the last time you got thoroughly smiled? And to think I was an English major and I learn it and break it to suit, to create, to evolve, to flesh-out, make flower my needs, my concerns, my human-ness, my personal-ness, my man-ness, my artists-ness, my father-ness, my husband-ness, so many of my real yet sometimes lost, obscured, forgotten ness'es! What makes me who I am as I am , then and now, and will always be.
I WAS NOT prepared to like : " Pretty Polly " but the visceral, ' heart-blood ' quality of high riased voice, emotion, rawness, violence, ... it all gathered and gathered and exploded over and over into me, upon me, over me, around me, it would not let me be : close to a haunting crushing emotional crying and sympathy.
I LOVED THIS all, was smiling, moved, almost drained, caught-up, involved, engaged, enraged, calmed, cleared, coddled, cuddled, crammed, creamed, controlled-almost with word, sound and more. Loved it.
I COULD SEE many of us enjoying this, and it could be enjoyed with many of our favorite spirits from beer, cider, liquers, liquors, waters and wines, ... I could list many here, and I may.

I DO WANT TO REMIND Everyone about our Big_theme Beer-Tasting this Thursday, April 6th, 2017 tasting here that I have been helping Santos Rivera to organize and bring to you. It is our 2nd BIG-THEME BEER-TASTING : Join Us, have a great time, try some great beers and one cider, too, and meet people, share in our community here, feel appreciated and alive!
THIS RECTANGULAR SPACE here has held many memories and  and experiences, many of you have been here and many great things have happened. It has been an amazing rectangle, and like flies on the walls, the stories this rectangle holds, has held, knows, can tell, too if only they could talk?!?
SO I WILL DO MY BEST to share some of the highlights I see. One being the strong sense of community that we all hold and share. It is not just about spirits, it is about everything, now as much as ever before.
PEOPLE COME and GO and we had Trace and Shilpa stop by this weekend that lived in the Quebec House. They were here this weekend, and we had to have a group hug before proceeding to anything else. We will probably be delivering to them soon here in Washington D.C., where it is legal to do so.
THEN Meri K that lived in the Broadbent apartments came by and brought some home-made cookies for us yesterday as she heads off to the West Coast to join her two boys and families, a total upheaval and change for her! I ate two of the cookies earlier : D-Voooon : another way to say divine! Santos needs to taste one now!
I MISS some people that have passed away like David, Zia, John, Stephen, Agostino, Pat, and more. You were the very very best, you would come make conversation, trade stories, anecdotes, smile, smirk, laugh, guffaw, ... and we would all be off on some laughing, gut-splitting fun tirade, escapade, fueled by one another's countenamces, facial expressions, stances.
IT HAS ALWAYS been the highest honor that many of you have brought your relatives here to meet us, and we have celebrated largely when these visits have occured.
WE HAVE CELEBRATED here so many weedings, engagements, birthdays, even deaths and sicknesses, together, as one, as a Cleveland Park neighborhood family of good people just doing what is right and working as a team to move along, enjoy, share, feel the love, the care, the community-hood!
SO : Thanks to you all, keep on coming, keep it coming : we will, too : we need one another to make it forward in thse difficult times. We are now taking doantions for cervical cancer research. I got the idea from Mandy, one of our great regular customers. She suggested it to me. Thanks Mandy.

Both Liquor & Wine? I'm a wine guy and I write the store emails each and every week here in our marvelously vibrant and exciting Cleveland Park neighborhood in Washington D.C. Northwest and I am thrilled to be here and to do so. There's so much to share and to talk about and for me wine is where I feel the most comfortable. That's why it is great to have Greg Siebert here to help me now. As he is coming from Rochester, New York with 17 years behind him of bar and restaurant experience to help me out. We were talking last week and he was saying that he would start to write something pretty soon about all of this in perhaps a blog? I mentioned that he could do it as well on both Facebook as well as on our web page? All would be welcome as people turn to all these different channels of communication to get their information today.
WINE WAS KING A FEW YEARS AGO and TODAY it is having to share more of it's throne with both beer and with liquor as well as with ciders and bottled water and olive oil and whatever else that we get. So the market is shifting and we are selling more and more to a younger crowd that is interested in things across the board. WE are naturally trying to cater more to this crowd that is embracing us, our more-relaxed environment and our willingness to do all that we can to be as accamadating and have as many of the things that they want. We have to stay together and work together and thus grow and blossom more together - one large and expanding family of sorts in a very volatile and confusing time of so many quick changes and upheavals.
SO IN THESE TIMES OF CHANGE EXPECT TO SEE changes here. One already has been a tightning-up of our space and displays and shelves with better organization and more signs to let you know where things are available. There is still more planned and we want it to be as pleasant and stimulating an experience for you as possible. Greg has been a big help in accomplishing much of this and for this and many other things he already has my utmost respect and thanks. I SPEND A LOT OF TIME each Tuesday writing this store email and so I would like to get more of you all to open the emails and at least scan them.      4) PRESIDENTE Cervesa Pilsnere beer brewed in the Dominican Republic ( On Special for $7.99 a 6-pack of 12 ounce bottles, ) is a staple item for us and Santos has got a display of it up front and I am sure also chilled in our beer case in the back. As the temperatures rise into the eighties as they did yesterday it will be a welcome treat. Cheers.
     5) SCHLAFLY Export India Pale Ale Special Release ( $12.99 a 6-pack, 12 ounce bottles , 8% Alc. by volume, ) is something that Santos just handed me to put into the email. Limited release.
     6) BELL'S " Oberon " Ale ( $9.99 6pack 12-ounce bottles ) is back once again much to the relief I am sure of all of you out there that love this ale.
LIQUOR & LIQUEUR By Ravinder Sharma :
     1) MATHILDE Liqueur " Poire " original liqueur from Ars, France ( On Special for $22.99, 18% alc. by volume, 750ml bottle ) now is available in this larger-size bottle, too. It's a regular and loved item here in Cleveland Park.
     2) Lorenzo INGA Grappa di Barolo ( made from the Nebbiolo grape ), double-distilled ( $26.99 a 375ml bottle, 40% alc. by volume ) is back by popular demand. Flavorful. too.
     3) OCOCAJE Pure Pisco D.O. ICA is from Peru( $24.99 ) and is brand new here. I still have not sampled it. The word Okukaje means " between hills ", made from the Quebranta grape must. Come check it out as well as our other Peruvian Piscos.
     4) MALT SCOTCH WHISKY Aged 12 years from Michel Couvreur ( $56.99 ) is exclusively pot-distilled from germinated barley dried on Scottish peat. Unfiltered in Michel's Burgundy caves and reduced with Scottish water. A French-Scottish effort

          WHITES :
     1) CORTENOVA Pinot Grigio Delle Venezia 2010 ( $8.99, 750 ml bottle, ) is one that Greg loved - so fresh and bright and so easy to enjoy with or without a meal. ALSO : available in the red Montepulciano as well.
     2) DOS PASOS Sauvignon Blanc 2009 from Chile's Aconcagua Valley ( $8.99 ) has got some extra flavor and taste as well as color to warm us all up a wee bit as it's still often cold and wet outside.
          ROSE :
     3) CHATEAU GUIOT Costieres De Nimes dry French rose 2009 ( $9.99 ) from Saint Gilles, 30800 is a blend of both Grenache and Syrah. I used it for my wine class here last Saturday and it has some extra depth and body and was well-received by all.
          REDS :
     4) Petit Caprice 2009 Vin De Pays of the VIGNERONS De CARACTERE ( $8.99 ) is a favorite repeat here. It's a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah and very forward and fleshy and drinkable all by itself.
    5) TRES OJOS Unfiltered Old-Vines Garnacha ( called Grenache in France ) from Calatayud, Spain ( $8.99 ) is so flavorful and pleasing and Greg loved this one, too.
     6) " Solemiro " 2009 Rosso Di Toscana from Peter Matt is an old-fashioned style Tuscan red - pithy and earthy and rustic and with some edge and always best when served with a meal. We both really liked this Solemiro dry red.
     1) Nata Vachnadze Saperavi Kakheti Georgian wine ( $14.99 ) was tasted here this past Friday by rep Mamuka along with four other Saperavi indigenous wines and they all sold quite well. This needs a meal and has got it's own interesting personality and character. Great when you grill outside.
     2) Reserve ALTO 3 Malbec from Catamarca, Argentina ( $15.99 ) was tasted here this past Saturday and sold quite well. It's a flavorful and dry red that is best when paired with a meal.
     3) ONIX Priorat Classic 2009 from Spain is a blend of 50% Garnacha and 50% Carignan. It sells for $22.99 and is an absolutely delicious mouthful of satisfying flavors and tastes. Greg absolutely loved it and announced that it might have been the best wine he tasted last Wednesday when our reps came with many bottles to taste.
     4) BAGORDI Rioja 2009 ( $13.99 ) from Spain has a lot of elegance and finesse and polish and immediately pleasing falvors. Medium-to-light bodied and a joy to drink now. We tasted it here this past Saturday to much acclaim.
     5) DOMAINE De La GUICHARDE 2009 Cotes Du Rhone dry red ( $14.99 ) was another wine that Greg and I tasted with Regis last week. Greg really liked it and opened a bottle yesterday for our customers here. It sure is balanced and forward and really nicely nuanced. Quite the treat to enjoy now, this 2009!
     6) CHATEAU D'AGEL 2009 Minervois dry French Southwest French wine ( $11.99 ) has got just enough of everything to make it an ideal wine to enjoy with seasoned and grilled foods.
     7) BT Garnacha Tintoera " Spanish Inspiration " from BODEGAS TINTORALBA ( $9.99 ) is another really tasty wine to enjoy with this cooler weather and dampness.
     8) Lot 96 from California's FOPPIANO Vineyards ( $10.99 ) from owner Lou Foppiano ( he tasted it on me recently and I LOVED IT! ) is a blend of various grapes and made by his female wine-maker. What a treat - and I was thrilled to know that it was so inexpensive.
     9) APPALINA 2008 Merlot French kosher ( $10.99 ) from the Vin De Pays D'Oc is absolutely delicious and a real treat to enjoy now with or without a meal. I really enjoyed it and have ordered some immediately with the holiday Passover  around the corner.
    10) DON MANUEL VILLAFANE 2010 Torrontes 2010 ( $11.99 ) from Mendoza, Argentina is a great " new " addition to our store. I think it is the first time ever that we have had this wine.
    11) LEGADO De Don Manuel Villafane 2009 Chardonnay ( $12.99 ) is a nice flavorful dry Chardonnay that wants me to drink another glass for it's balance and finesse and overall balance. It's actually quite lovely. That's why I bought more than usual - I liked it much more than usual. A whole lotta wine for the money!
    12) Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 of the Don Manuel Villafane Estate ( $12.99 ) fro, Mendoza, Argentina is one that my two good friends Lee and Leslie liked the other day when they met the owner Harrison when he came to taste and the store was filled with wine reps. It sure was balanced and flavorful and a very nice balance of components.

I'd like to do something " fun and different " and " for the very first time " as she has such a broad portfolio. I AM SURE I HAVE FORGOTTEN MANY THINGS like our business association of Cleveland Park of 31 members just got together at Ardeo to discuss our next stage and plans with Lauren Adkins of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's " Main Street " program to see what things we could do to get more recognition and to get a nicer two blocks for everyone here to enjoy even more than already. We can tweak things and make this an even better bit of shopping, dining and community than it is already. We want to be proactive and promote better our community. It was a great meeting.  Big Theme Wine-Tasting is a bit late in some ways for the topics, in other ways a great way still to pay respect and celebrate our days of Passover, Easter, and Earth Day that are in April though already passed. This means we will have wines that are kosher and some from Israel, too ( they may not all be kosher ), for Passover, and for Easter we will taste some fine wines made in the United States that are perfect for this time, too : and for Earth Day we will have some fine sustainable farming, vegan, organic and biodynamic wines to pour.
STAY-TUNED, just started working on all of this a couple of weeks ago and still have a whole lot to do.
I HAVE A BEEF to share with you all, just so you know the signs I have put on the inside of our storefront windows we had to move yesterday becasue the DC district Goverment came by and told us it was illegal to have them up as they obstructed the view into the store. I have moved two of them and placed them on the ways of our display window wells. We still firmly believe and are here to support the community in any way that we can. Cheers.      1) La Folie 2017 Sour Ale ( matured in oak barrels ) from NEW BELGIUM, $15.99 for a 1 Pt. 6 Fl/ Oz bottle, with 7% alcohol by volume , from their ' Lips of Faith ' series, : " Our traditional Flanders-style sour brown is matured in large French oak wine barrels called foeders for 1-3 years, 13 foeders are then chosen and mindfully blended for complex notes of green apple, cherry and caramel. YES!

SERIOUS : Almost That Is! It's NOT QUITE The End Of Summer Yet and so we still have things for you all to stretch out your holidays last two days of August for example? I know, I know : work always gets in the way and yet ONCE YOU GET OFF we are always here and more than ready to help you all slide smoothly through the rest of the day and into the evening when you can fully relax and take the load off.
IT SURE WAS AN INTENSE WEEK last week with first an earthquake on Tuesday and then a hurricane on Saturday passing through our region. I don't know about you but it was pretty intense here all of last week starting around 3PM on Tuesday and we want to thank you for all your shopping here. I am at this moment trying to focus and get organized and ready for Thursday the 1st of September when lots of " new and exciting " wines will be rolling through our back door. I've got lists and prices and emails to go through today and tomorrow as I am running out of time quickly.
I HAVE FOUND SOME STUNNING WINES to share with you all and one of them is the 2000 NICOLIS Amarone della Valpolicella Classico ( a half bottle ( 375ml size ) that on Thursday, September 1st, 2011 will be On Sale for $17.99/ now they are $27.99 - that's a $10 savings : two ( 2 ) half bottles make a full 750ml bottle at that would be $35.99 a bottle and that's a ridiculous price  ) and it's so pithy and earthy and old-style. Definitely a great food wine and not so much one for sipping on it's own. A hearty-robust food taste and this hearty-robust food wine would be a great combo. I have purchased the last five cases and these are mature wines in a half-bottle that may be taken on picnics and on camping trips. It's for convenience and of really high quality, too.
WE HAVE MORE CHAMPAGNE, the LOUIS De VARANCY " Cuvee Prestige " Brut Non-Vintage from Champillon coming on Thursday as well : the last five cases of this as well On Sale @ $28.99/ Reg : $33-$35. It's so smooth and bright and fresh and elegant and perfect for sipping all by itself. It needs no food. Creamy and not yeasty heavy - lovely and enticing. With the 10% case discount it's only $26.09 a bottle : what a deal! Come get some while you still can at this great everyday price for real French champagne. I highly recommend this for the price.
OUR NEXT ' Big-Theme " Wine-Tasting Is On Wednesday, September 14th, 2011 ( 5:30-8:30PM

ALSO For Thursday, September 1st, 2011 : WE are getting in a couple of " new " Chilean wines called VINA AROMO, a dry red Carmenere and a dry red Merlot ( Riservas both ) that sold for $16.99 a bottle and are now On Special for $10.99. Greg and tried them with our local rep recently and it was funny that at first I did not like the Melot at all. I found it tight and hard to taste : no flesh and no finesse at all. The Carmenere we both liked pretty much immediately and I thought and later said : " What's not to like? " ANYWAY, we ordered twenty-five assorted cases and I went back to taste them again ( that's twenty or so minutes later ) and I really liked the Merlot - even more than the Carmenere. I liked the more classic style that the Merlot took : slow to open and reveal it's charms. The Merlot will always be a more tight, more food wine whereas the Carmenere is much fleshier and more generous and easier to enjoy with or without food. It will be easier to sell the Carmenere but ultimately I think the Merlot is the more interesting wine. We will see : only time will tell.

DOS PASOS & ALMA Chilean Wines BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! This will be great as Manuel Rojas of both will be our Special Guest for our Chilean Big-Theme Wine-Tasting on Wednesday, Sept. 14th, 2011 ( 5:30-8:30PM ). There is no charge for these tastings and so you will be able to try a full assortment from Manuel which includes the IN SITU ( the 2007 Caberent Sauvignon is delicious and drinking like five dreams come true, one for each day of the work week! ) wines as well as the DOS PASOS and the ALMA wines.
WE ALSO HAVE SOME ALMA ( 5 types from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenere, $14.99 for all of them ) and DOS PASOS ( Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and  Merlot, $9.99 for them all ), coming soon to Cleveland Park Wines. This is exciting. In the IN SITU wines we will have the Syrah, Chardonnay and the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Plenty of choices for you all. WE also have an ITALIAN Dry Red Pinot Noir VALUE : from Lombardy, Italy up in the north where Milan is : this 2009 Pinot Noir CA' DEA is according to sommelier Andrew Stover : " soft and juicy, really big fruit, not a lot of tannin ... ". I agree with him. It's a crowd-pleaser. It's On Special for $11.99/ regularly $14.99. Wow, this will turn some heads, especially with this weather that we are enjoying now. I bought fifteen cases and after those are sold the price will revert back to $15 a bottle. Come get some while you can. This is a real treat, very special. 
BUT HEY GUYS , this email is much more than just wine. I have to include other things like the really successful news of our GREAT LAKES beer tasting ( Dortmunder Gold, Commodore Perry and the Burning River were some poured ) this past weekend. The local rep had a number of selections open and I must say I got a chance to try them all and they were really showing well. I was very pleased. I really enjoyed the Oktoberfest myself.
     1) Pumpkin Ale from SCHLAFLY, this special release ( On Special for $12.99 a 6-pack of 12-ounce bottles, 8% alcohol by volume, with spices/ cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, ) : " I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion " Henry David Thoreau. I agree.

Medium-to-light-bodied, fruit-forward, showing really well already 2012, the 6 months in small barrels was just enough to give it pop, zing, and appropriate sass!

Andrew Stover of his own company VINO50 SELECTIONS here to taste and to talk about Jancis Robinson, famous British wine-writer known the whole world over by us in the wine business. She will be at the Baird Auditorium on Thursday night, March 21st, 2013 at 7PM talking about her books and the exciting wines of America. The book devoted eight pages to the wines of Virginia I believe?!? That's a good start and you should all google Paul Jameson and read his excellent review of this book in the New York Times. Many good points and comparisons to past efforts to address the ever-expanding and impressive efforts of those making wines here in America that also includes Canada. All good : still room to improve and grow but some excellent references for us all wishing to spread the word about how fine the wines being made here in America are!
I WILL SUGGEST that more be written next time on the individual states here in the U.S. that should include a minimum of four paragraphs and should include a list of at least 5-10 wineries in each state. Let us all make our own decisions whether the wines are good or not : but in the meantime include some for us to look into or visit with corresponding addresses and emails and web page info, too. That would be wonderful. All in one book : so many possibilities to hold in our hands and to look at, think about, reach out to, buy a wine of, visit a vineyard.
THIS MORNING I got a call from someone wishing to send a bottle to Potomac , Maryland by/ from  Marlo Thomas. I gave her some numbers to call as she had already tried fifteen places in Maryland and they all told her that they could not deliver. Marlo wants to send a " Thank You " to someone and I hope that her assistant is successful. Wish we could have done it ourselves, but it is not legal to deliver for us into Maryland. Cheers.
I HAVE BEEN HEARING lots about the LITTLE WASHINGTON Winery in Virginia and so went to their Facebook page and left them a message to contact us here and " shared " two of their pictures with you on our Facebook page. I am excited to try their wines. They had " green wine " for Saint Patty's Day and my question to them was : " Was the wine good enough to go and ask for a second glass ?  ... and  What does it taste like ? ". I have not heard back, but I trust the wine was good and that a second glass was in order as well. Stay-Tuned for more info on this as you know we actively support the Virginia and local wines here.
I AM ALSO MOST-interested in trying the new wines from the " newly-planted vines " by horticulturalist Lucie Morton in Rob's vineyard. Jean Gagliolo is our local rep and I will call him now to remind us. to bring us samples ASAP! All this is food-for-thought and will be interesting to share with Jancis on Thursday evening if given the chance. Cheers. UPDATE : News Flash : Just met winemaker Michele le D'Aronix that came with 4 excellent dry red Bordeaux wines from the right bank of Merlot, that are mostly Merlot blends, with one being made without any wood aging ( the 
     1) Chateau Le Ringue , Bordeaux 2011, $16.99, fruit-forward, lovely color and balance and soft mouth-feel ;  
     2) Chateau Beausejour Montagne Saint-Emilion " Pentimento " made by Michele and using only barrels already one year old, a bit richer, more extraction and mouth-grip that I liked as I got accustomed to it's distinct personality of balance and flesh and finesse ;
     3) Chateau La Croix Lartigue Cotes Du Castillon " L'Expression 2010, bolder, needing more time and some food to help take a bit of the edge and heartier mouth-grip - also really well-balanced and fruit-forward ), and ; 
    4) Chateau La Bienfaisance Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, 2010 made by one of the few female winemakers in Bordeaux, according to Michele. I liked the charm and the expression of elegance and silky brightness to this wine.
     Here we have 4 people involved in the making of these wines and I liked the balance and the definition here, and that none of the wines ever lost sight of the fruit in the grapes with which they started which was principally Merlot. Bravo.
     Michele told me that she Rachel Martin of the BOXWOOD WINERY, Middleburg, VA. each year in Bordeaux, France as they have the same French self-taught enologist that she described I believe as like the " Yoda " of wine-making. I like that. I like that a lot.
     Everything that Michele said spoke to me in volumes and since she is from New York I hope to get her here to taste these wines soon and explain their hands-on, respect the land from which the wines come, make the best expressions that they can and not be tied-up in too much tradition that can inhibit them from achieving their goals. 
     To my palate they have succeeded in their mission and it will be great to sell them. Lucinda Williams may bring them by tomorrow for Michel Dumas to try. I hope so. These wines and their makers reflect very much the philosophy of our store here.
    COME check out the BOXWOOD ESTATE 2009 " Topiary " Saint-Emilion style red Bordeaux, $29.99, 13.5% alcohol by volume,, Middleburg, Virginia ) that represents what Michele and the three others are doing there and that Rachel is doing here.
     Bravo to all of these fine efforts! It will be great to have Rachel taste them here again soon. Maybe we can get her and Michele to do an in-store wine-tasting here soon together? That would be great. We hope to have some of Michele's wines here by April.
     I kept some of Michele's own Pentimento 2009 in my glass : love the deep bright purple-garnet color, the nose pulls me from my seated position and into the glass, and the taste on my lips, mouth and tongue makes me glad I just enjoyed my pork chop for lunch and makes me think that I would have been better served by the l'onglet cut of red beef that I love to order from our very own Lavandou restaurant at the end of the block : l'onglet et frites avec le sauce magique brune ... vers le paradis, vraiment.

THE WEATHER IS GETTING WARMER AND IT'S REALLY QUITE BEAUTIFUL and it's time to talk about the rest of the week here besides Saint Patty's Day. I'm looking at some CASA DE CAMPO Argentinian Malbec that just arrived along with some Mommy's Time Out dry white Italian blend of Garganega and Pinot Grigio for our shelves. A few minutes earlier some YELLOW & BLUE liter boxes of 2009 dry white Argentina Cafayate and the 2009 Malbec San Juan Argentina, too ( BOTH at $10.99 a box). The wines are made with the idea of organic where they can be ( the Malbec for example is organic ) and the Torrontes white  leaves a smaller carbon imprint on our environment because of the packaging.
     1) PHIN & MATT'S Extraordinary Ale from the SOUTHERN TIER  BREWING COMPANY ( On Special for $8.99, 12 oz. bottles,, Lakewood, New York ) has got great colors and packaging. It is made with American hops and barley.

     1) Cava De Moragas Brut ROSSIGNOL ( $17.49 ) is really bright and fresh and creamy-dreamy-silky nice. I think that you will all love it as much as we did. it's a bit more expensive and yet it gives back more - much more than you would expect for this price.
     2) " Perle Rose " French dry rose sparkling wine demi-Sec ( so in fact it's a mellow and full. lush soft dry ), $16.99 from the Pyrenees Mountains is a true delight to sip all by itself.
     3) Annalisa Moscato Dolce-Sweet ( $10.99 ), Italian and tasting like fresh apricots, nectarines and peaches with a dash of honey and a splash of nuts - wow, it's a winner.
     4) Prosecco in Split-Size bottles ( 1.87ml bottles, three in a pack, $11.99 for all three ) from VILLA YOLANDA is a great treat and the bottles are in a cut-glass form that is also beautiful to look at as you sip this refreshing and forward and pleasing Italian sparkling wine from the Veneto region. Tasty.
          WHITES -
     1) B.V. Coastal Estates Sauvignon Blanc 2009 ( $16.99 ) : it's always great to have a BEAULIEU Vineyard product here in the store. They are on a roll these days and were founded back in 1900! Cheers!
     2) LONGBOARD Vineyards 2009 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc is back again by popular demand. Wine-maker Oded Shakked just did the great dinner and wine-tasting before hand here and afterward at Ardeo restaurant. I was fortunate enough to attend and the Sauvignon sure is showing beautifully with the food. Flavorful and tasty and makes a great statement all on it's own. Try some.
     3) CLIFF LEDE 2009 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ( $25.99 ) from California is quite crisp and dry and what I like about it is that it also has some real body and weight and presence. It's a better food wine than drinking it all by itself.
     4) Chardonnay from Mexico's Valle De Guadalupe Baja California 2009, $21.99 has both power and body and is a really solid wine to pit against many a food flavor. I think everyone should try it at some point with a tasty meal, vegetarian like some falafel with chick peas and a good sauce ...
          ROSE -
     1) Shiraz rose 2009 from the JERUSALEM Winery - this Jerusalem Hills Israeli rose  is made in a French style and is best with salads, grilled poultry, fish and all pizzas.
          REDS -
     1) Barbera from TERRE D'ALERAMO ( $8.99 ) is a real treat , so soft and bright and velvety- so pleasing with or without a meal.
     2) XYZIN Zinfandel ( 10 Year Old Vines ), $15.99 from Ondine, the wine-maker has so much body and pizzaz and flavor and a youthful exuberance that is contagious. I really liked it a whole lot. They say on the label : " The last word in Zinfandel ".
     3) Zinfandel from the Treborce Vineyard in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley , $29.99 from DARK HORSE is about as good as Zinfandel gets. It reminds me of the old-style of Zinfandels - lovely, toasty, spicy, earthy, pithy with layers of tar, leather and smoky accents, too.
     4) " Foxy " a blend of grapes from the KIT FOX Vineyards , $14.99, is so pleasing and forward and appealing - everyone loved it at our tasting last week with the owner here last Thursday night.
       THURSDAY, Saint Patty's Day, March 17th, 2011 : 5-8 PM - We have a tasting of both the JOHN L. SULLIVAN Irish Whiskey ( On Special for $22.99 ) and CROLAN'S Irish Cream ( On Special for $12.99). Join us, never any charge.
     Greg and I will open at least one wine or more to taste as well.
       FRIDAY, March 18th, 2011 ( 5-8PM ): We will have an XYZZIN wine-tasting here with the ASCETIC with Tom of Southern Slopes pouring and maybe Ken Myers, too.
       SATURDAY, March 19th, 2011 ( 3-7PM ) : We will have Regis here of Roanoke Imports here tasting the LEROY red and white burgundies that I mentioned last week as well as some great wines of Sicily and southern Italy including the grapes Malvasia, Frappato , Nero D'Avola and Insolia. This will be very special indeed. The LEROY wines sell for $60 for the white and $50 for the red. Amazing and old and simply divine and wonderful and unbelievable!
